Baconman,
You bet yer booties!!!
Especially since democrats, liberals, and left wingers are liers, their politics are based on lies, and their positions on everything disolve like a salted slug when exposed to the truth.

That’s how I really feel.
Peace, Tom

I find this question, can you be right-wing and a Christian, bizarre. When I was young I was very left-wing, but I never would have said a Christian cannot be right wing. I hope you aren’t being troubled by someone teaching that someone conservative really cannot properly be considered a Christian.
It would be very strange too to hold that Christianity is to be identified with a particular position on national health care or what degree of welfare is best.
You may like to read the social encyclicals of the popes though if you are wondering about Catholic social views. Pope Benedict I have heard has just come out with one, though I haven’t read it. Perhaps someone can provide a link to this and other social encyclicals. Some important ones have come out since the Nineteenth Century, up until now.
It is true though that such encyclicals take a negative view of unrestrained capitalism, but of course they do also take a very negative view of some-left wing views, as they do when speaking against abortion and socialism. No single leading political philosophy in the United States actually matches Catholic social teaching.
What is their view of unrestrained communism, which led to the murder of over 100 million people in the 20th century?

But at the original question:

No. You can be neither left-wing, nor right-wing. You shouldn’t care more about your political party or political stance than you do about God.

“Left-wing” teachings in accordance with Church teaching:
-against unjust wars
-against excessive greed
-against affliction of poverty on peoples
-against torture
-against capital punishment
-against consumerist ideologies
-against persecution of immigrants (human beings with souls, created by God, which are sometimes called “illegal aliens”)

“Right-wing” policies in accordance with Church teaching:
-against evils of abortion
-against evils of euthanasia
-against homosexual marriage
-against the spread of secularism
-against pre-marital sex education with support for chastity and abstinence
-against destruction of human stem-cells
-against human cloning

Neither “wing” is correct completely, nor is either wing incorrect completely. I take a stand on each issue, rather than conforming to any political agenda. God’s will be done, rather than mine, or any worldly political party for that matter. Remember that you owe your allegiance not to George Bush or Barack Obama, but to the true triune God.

I see what your other points are, but don’t try to spin that on me. I have no problem with legal immigration, I have a problem with illegial immigration. We have laws in this country and they should be enforced, what ever happned to rule of law? Maybe you should read an earlier post of mine. One is legal, the other is illegial.

In the 1950’s Anglican apologetics writer CS Lewis wrote an paper on the subject. I found it in a book called GOD IN THE DOCKET.
He point in the essay is that when you came to most political view, almost all can be justified in a Christian view. Big Government, small government, left consumers regulate by the marketplace verses let the government regulate. This was the danger of forming a “Christian” Policial party. George Bush and Barack Obama make claims to be Christian.
So what to do? Speak the truth about the issue you mentioned and do the most Christian thing of all, convert your neighbor.

There is a difference between Law Enforcement and persecution. One looks at the law and the other and the person’s skin color. My parish has an Hispanic Ministry and there are a number of Spanish speaking folks who go there. My children are adopted and half hispanic (born on the West Coast) yet I’ve incountered people at my Parish who keep trying to speak to them in Spanish and expecting them to understand, just because of how they look.
🤷

Your confusing the issue, i’m not talking about racism, I’m talking about illegial immigration, my uncle is Mexican, I have no problem with hispanic people, I do have a problem with people who defy the law.

The Church doesn’t automatically condemn capital punishment. The Church also teaches there is such a thing as a just war.

Nothing that the left promotes is actually part of church teachings. The left promotes statism, learned helplessness, and racial quotas. That is pure racism. The left also despises capitalism, which is the God-given right of an individual to make a decent living.

And illegal is illegal. I doubt the Church embraces or encourages those who flout the law. Immigration is a good thing. Immigrants arrive here by legal means. Illegal aliens do not.

Amen to you, bacon man!

Sorry. Right-wing politics are not God’s politics.

Capital punishment is only necessary as a preventive method, if there is no other method of incarceration. Most of the people out there who support it do so because they like vengeance. We also have to remember that we want these people to live, in the hope that they are converted. We must also remember that we quite simply must do our best to protect all human life, evil or not. Don’t believe me? Think I’m a liar? Then I guess that makes Pope John Paul II one too.

I also specifically said “unjust wars.” Yes, this includes the Iraq War (though not the War on Terror). Don’t believe me? Think I’m a liar? Then I guess that makes Pope John Paul II one too. Although apparently Democrats are just as hypocritical as Republicans, considering that many voted *FOR *the War.

The Church officially has supported justice for workers and is against *unrestrained *capitalism. This includes things such as higher minimum wages and workforce regulations, which Republicans are generally against. The Church is not against capitalism in itself, which is not inherently evil, but the evils which are the excesses of it. The Church is basically “third-way” in terms of economy. Don’t believe me? Think I’m a liar? Then I guess that makes Pope Leo XIII one too.

The Church does not support illegal immigration. The Church supports immigration reform. Think I am a liar? I guess that makes the US bishops liars.

bacon man: We are called to obey all **just **laws. However, we are not to obey unjust laws. Cardinal Mahoney of the Archdiocese of LA told all clergy and laity to disobey a recently-passed immigration law which was deemed unjust. I’m not here to spout my views. But I will give you examples of what the Church and bishops have taught and currently teach.

Don’t get me wrong, I am no Democrat. Certainly not. I am not a Republican either though, and there is a common misconception that the Republican party is more holy. Sorry if this upsets you guys, but we shouldn’t owe our allegiances to some secular authority. God comes first. Republican Party (or Democratic Party for that matter) comes second.

I agree with you, though i’d actually say the party comes third. And raising minimum wages hurts more people then it helps. What if your a struggling bussiness owner? They raise the money you have to pay, and now, you can’t expand your bussiness to compete with the compition, it might even put you out of bussiness. What about the people who now have no income? What about all the jobs that were never created?

Well, from my understanding of economics(which could be wrong), it is a little more complicated than the simple supply and demand model, especially in the economy of the US. Think about these other points also though:
-a higher minimum wage may reduce turnover(like the kids at McDonalds for 3 months), and hence training costs
-you might not have to worry about recruiting new workers at a higher wage
-minimum wage workers are not the biggest part of the company workforce, and it would represent such a small part that the costs could hardly matter

That’s not my main point though. My main point is trying to show what the Church teaches on these things. As much as I would love to, it is not going out and rambling on about Keynesian economics. Haha! Who would want to hear that? 😛

God bless you.

I cannot find where anyone called you a liar, not sure why you keep saying that.

You did however twist the truth, the poster did not say that the right wing was God’s party as you alluded to.

Oh, I know. I never accused anybody of it. I was just afraid people would think I have nothing to back it up. Some people may think these are my own opinions and not those of the Church.

As for the other comment, I’m just stating the general attitude of some people towards political parties. People seem to think that a political organization somehow can have a soul, and that one is evil while the other is good. The truth is that both are simply there to serve their interests.

I see what some people say about the Church’s positions on social issues. I consider myself quite right-wing and an ardent capitalist, I do beleive in helping the poor, but I don’t beleive in Socilized medicine (“universal healthcare”) and I support rolling back the welfare system, I beleive their should be some, but not to the extent we have it now. I was wondering, can I be right wing? Or is it an ideology thats incompatable with Catholic teaching?
Absolutely. You might enjoy reading about the Acton Institute, a libertarian Catholic institute.

You might also enjoy reading The Wanderer.

My apoligies, I am not attempting to offend. You seem to have some of the same exposure as I. Well many Americans do not. It is very easy for places to begin to find excuses not to hire someone because they look Hispanic or have a thick accent, because they’re afraid of being raided and fined by the government for hiering illegals.
Should they laws be enforced?, Yes. Are they now being enforced? No. Who is being hurt by this? The American legal system, they general American Public and the Mexicans who are crossing the border, and putting their lives at risk.
I could go on, but that would be getting further and further off from the point of this thread
