Can I buy a cross necklace for personal use?

I am new i hold it when i feel under stress. I talked to my best friend and he said you cannot buy a necklas you cannot buy such stuff … it should be gifted to me or something!! so I want to ask if i need to get one to keep with me all time!! is it ok to buy it ? or should it be gifted? I feel I am under attack lately and need to have it with me for protection but i have no catholic friend!! thank you
