Since I am a Cathechumen and am not able to receive communion yet, can I do an act of spiritual communion? Or would that be just like receiving communion, which is to only be reserved for baptized Catholics.

Anyone can make an act of spiritual communion.

All desire God, for God suffices 🙂

You can, but since you are not yet Baptized you would only receive Actual Grace, Drawing you towards God and increasing your desire for Baptism.

Of course you can. Baptized Catholics can also make it when in a state of mortakl sin and unable to receive or when for whatever reason Holy Communion is unavailable. It is good to remember that the concept of everyone receiving at every Mass is a relatively recent thing. Spiritual communion would help fill that void until reception was possible.

Wrong. The concept of everyone attending mass being eligible to receive was the norm for many centuries; those not eligible were dismissed before the eucharistic part of the Mass, after the liturgy of the word.

It was also customary for many centuries for reception to be quite infrequent as evidenced by the numerous religious orders who only received several times a year. St Bernadette was granted special dispensation so that she could receive several times a month while the rest of her order received I think four times a year. It is also true that until the concept of mortal sin was fully developed reception was much higher than in later years. But it must be remembered also that those in a state of mortal sin were not even allowed to attend the Mass at all and were generally considered to be totally lost.
