For those who have a Barnes & Noble Nook reader (any version) there are a number of bible downloads for free or for little cost, as both app’s or as book downloads. Both the NAB (Revised Edition) and the D/R are available as ebooks, and the Android app’s for the NookColor include NIV, KJV, Olive Tree and others which are all non-Catholic/Orthodox applications. The NAB-RE in hard copy is about $440 but the ebook is only $4.99.
If you don’t have a Nook, you can still use their bookstore, by just downloading the PC or Mac software for free, and then getting free or low cost ebooks. In fact, Amazon offers a similar system: free software and downloads. I don’t have a Kindle but have put the software on my little netbook ,and have found some really good Catholic and Orthodox reading material. One problem for both Amazon and B & N though, if you are a Mac user like me: you need OSX 10.5 with the Pentium processor. The old Power PC based machines will not run their Mac software. Ah, progress…
Happy reading and Blessed Sunday! bob.c

Thank You!

I’m on the road a lot and just spend hours of trying to get it on my iPod.
I hope it works! Didn’t feel to good with the King James version.
If you have an iphone/ipod another thing to consider is the ipieta app for 2.99. It comes with the DR, haydock commentary, Catholic calendar with mass readings, Catholic prayers, tons of books from writings of saints to old catechisms, etc.

=freesoulhope;3190534]I haven’t read the Bible in long while, due to circumstance:blush: , but i feel inspired now to read it again. I want to do a good study of the bible from start to finish. However, alot of bibles use old english, and are very difficult to follow. At the moment I’m on my mums computor attempting to copy scripture page for page from an online Bible called New American Bible. It also gives explanations for each passage. But its taking ages. Do you know of any free Bibles i can Down Load that have an easy read translation?
I would be most gratefull. God bless.

Pardon? It looks more like $16 on Amazon
Ooops, sorry for the typo. I did see a few on the Barnes & Noble list for upwards of $300 (fancy soft leather bound family bibles) but many at less than $20, with hard cover and leather cover. I bought mine, a St. Joseph paperback, for about $10 and enjoy it very much. Also I use the NRSV, D/R and rarely the NKJV. Best of luck and have a blessed Lent! bob.c

I want to download a free catholic Bible for my PC use especially when I am offline

Maybe a better question would be why isn’t there a Catholic bible that can be downloaded for free?

Do you think Jesus would charge people money for the bible?

How would the USCCB answer that question?

I ask because I know they make money from the sale of the NAB.

I know that the Douay Rheims is in the public domain and other individuals that are Catholics that have produced bible that are in the public domain-isn’t Ron Conte doing that?

I guess it all depends on what the definition of “Catholic” bible is.

I think it would be great if one could download an English version of the Nova Vulgata for free.

I’ll continue to tilt at that windmill and wait patiently for a pope to come along that will take the name of Jerome.
A better question would be why are you asking the question? The USCCB site, USCCB.ORG has unlimited access to the NAB. You can print it til the cows come home and search it as well. I know for a fact you can download the Douay Rheims Challoner on an iPhone app for free, just like the King James is available, because it has no copyright.

In answer to your question, I don’t think Jesus gave away his carpentry work for free. Do you? What did he eat if he did? The USCCB had to pay people to translate the NAB. Do you do things for free? If so, be here Saturday morning, I’ve got a Lawn Boy for you to crank up and walk behind (I’ll give you a PB&J and cold glass of water when you’re done, if you do a nice job edging the walk).

I have two bibles that I downloaded for free to my smartphone (Android). One is part of a nice app called Laudate that includes the New American Bible, Liturgy of the Hours, Stations of the Cross, Rosary, various Catholic prayers, etc. The other is a New International Version from YouVersion which has a few more whistles and bells (reading plans, etc.).

Do you use Android? I use my DRB Bible on my device. And for that you have it available for free on the Market. Free offline. No online version…thank God!

It comes Latin version which can toggled to show the English translation too!

Hope this helps 👍

If I may,

On what operating system and device(s) are you planning on reading the bible?

There is a free software called OliveTree Bible Reader
olivetree.com/

You can use the application on Windows 7, Mac Lion, iOS, and Android. The Douay-Rheims is free:
olivetree.com/store/product.php?productid=16576

I use it across platforms and when you create and account name it updates across your devices.

There also is an app called Laudate, it is for iOS and Android. It is pretty amazing as it includes:
Daily Readings, Liturgy of Hours, Missals, Rosary, and the DRB and NAB. It’s free too!!!
amazon.com/AJ-Laudate/dp/B005YH5R7A
itunes.apple.com/us/app/laudate/id499428207?mt=8

Disclaimer: I do NOT work for any of these apps. I just like them a lot 🙂

Also, I’d strongly advice, if possible, to purchase the NewAdvent CD as it includes ALL the material they have on the website. I think they still have it on sale. That way you can have their content offline.

Good Luck and God Bless!

Jose

You either have to be mentally retarded or demon possessed to be a Roman Catholic. Lies, lies, and more lies!

So the translators weren’t paid the when they completed it (or get paid along the way)? Really?

Do you pay a fee to read it online? If not, why not?

Or how about…if you’ve already bought a hard copy, why do you need to pay additionally to get the same text on each of your iPod, android device, PC, MAC, and linux platforms?

Our “competitors” somehow have dozens of free translations available for every conceivable platform. Why don’t we? Perhaps it’s because we don’t want people to read the bible. After all, that’s why we chained bibles to the lecterns in our churches for so long 😉

Did St. Jerome translate the bible for free?

Is it impossible to have a St. Jerome in today’s world?

Would every competent Catholic bible translator charge the Catholic Church for their services?

I don’t believe that every Catholic who could do a good job of translating the bible would charge for their translation services.
