I believe it is arrogant and selfish to believe “your” church is the only church. I do believe you should take the time to get your head out of Catholic sources and really research the history of the Catholic church. You know the Catholic Church burned at the stake Joan of Arc for saying she heard from God. She was not allowed to hear from God, only the church leaders were. Sounds like Pharisee teaching to me.

I always acknowledged that with the amount of time the Catholic Church has been around, it has had more than its fare share of scrupulous people, it does no one any good to try to deny that. But at the same time, only a Church that has been protected by God’s grace could possibly survive for so long BECAUSE of all the heinous acts that have been committed by the SINFUL PEOPLE in the church, not by the church itself. Imagine if any other XYZ church committed even a fraction of those atrocities, would they still be around today, there are plenty of of Churches have fallen for even lesser causes. The church is by no means a Museum for saints but really is indeed a Hospital for Sinners. In addition if and when we do a HONEST UNBIASED search of History we find that the Catholic Church gave us the, BIBLE, Hospitals, Schools, the Scientific Method, Moral and Social Justice etc etc

Actually, it was the English government that rigged her trial after she was handed over to them by the Burgundese. She was re-tried after her death by actual church officials and acquitted of all charges. The church was in no way responsible for her death. In fact, it DID recognize her claims as true, and made her a saint in the twentieth century.

As far as Catholicism being the only church, we do recognize that the Orthodox Church is a true church, albeit in schism, since it satisfies the two requirements that Catholics believe are necessary to be considered a “true church”… it has maintained its apostolic succession, and it believes in the Real Presence during Communion.

As a Catholic, no. I don’t believe it is arrogant or selfish to believe the Catholic church (and Orthodox, I guess, I’m just learning that) is the True Church. It’s not the “only” church, but it is the True Church that Christ founded. For anyone else to say differently is to call Jesus a liar and say that he did not keep his word to protect his church.

The only people I have met who feel it is arrogant of me think this way are those who believe in their brand of christianity.

Never forget: protestants are PROTESTING the Catholic church. They may try to tell you it’s from Latin that they are standing witness, but it came about as a protest to the Catholic church. Now, children are not to suffer the sins of the father. So it is charitable to call them brothers and sisters in Christ if they have a valid baptism. Not all who call themselves christians are christians nor perform a valid baptism.

It is our duty as Catholics to correct and lead others back in unity to the one holy catholic and apostolic church. Now, whether they refuse to come over is a different story. 👍

Let us know when you find that Church without sinners.

I thought Joan of Arc was burned at the stake by the British.

What kind of help do you want with this Bill?

What is the larger context of the conversation?

Do you want help refuting the factual error that the Catholic Church burned Joan of Arc at the stake or that the Catholic Church taught that only Church leaders are “allowed” to hear from God?

How do you propose to refute what someone “believes.” They are not basing their statement on any facts, merely what they “believe.” You will not be successful arguing against a person who lacks the ability to reason logically.

Lets start here "Do you want help refuting the factual error that the Catholic Church burned Joan of Arc at the stake

I’m hard put to know how help is possible when the situation is presented in a manner that requires everyone to hold that the church they belong to is “untrue,” or face accusations of arrogance and selfishness. Good heavens, anyone who stays a member of a church they hold to be untrue has much bigger problems than arrogance and selfishness.

That, or course, does not even start to deal with the proposition that the Church is not something set up by mere humans.

One analogy I encountered dealt with the concepts of the many roads to the mountaintop model, where saying one road up the mountain was better than any other one led to similar labels. That might have some traction if all roads were built from the bottom up by humans. But what if one road was built from the top down to us, by the Son of God, who said to HIs Apostles and through them to us, “Use this one”?

Blessings,

Gerry
