Can I get my throat blessed?

I’m a new Catholic so I have no idea if this is possible…

I have been getting tonsilitis alot lately. I’m currently sick right now. I’ve had/have a 103 fever and feel awful. Nov. 27 was the last time I had this. My throat has hurt for over a month and about 2 days ago I got super sick again. Is it possible to get my throat blessed? I was going to call the Parish and see if anyone was available but I wanted to hear what you guys say…I don’t want to sound weird calling and asking that.

Yes you can get your throat blessed. If you really feel uncomfortable you can wait until Feb. 3rd. Traditionally on the feast of St. Blaise throats are blessed, whether there are health issues or not.

Honestly…I don’t think I can wait until Feb 3. I’m unable to swallow any type of food. All I can do is drink stuff. I’m completely miserable. Do I have to wait until the 3rd or is this something that can be done asap??

It can be done at any time. Just call a priest for an appointment. If it is as bad as you say you might also want to request the Annointing of the Sick. The sacrament isn’t just for people that are dying. Anyone with a serious illness can receive it.

You also may want to look if there is a parish near you offering a healing Mass.

You can ask your priest (or deacon) for a blessing for any reason at any time. He will probably be happy to oblige.

Don’t forget to see your doctor too. You may need an antibiotic. (God wants us to use “ordinary means” to deal with the challenges that come our way!)

The Book of Blessings incudes Chapter 2 “Orders for the Blessing of the Sick”. This can be done by a priest, deacon or layperson.

The structure of the full ceremony for adults is:
Introductory Rites
Reading of the Word of God
Psalm or other suitable song
Intercessions
Prayer of Blessing
Concluding Rite.

There is also an Order for the Blessing of Children and a Shorter Rite.

Okay…see a doctor! NOW! Go! Immediately!
It could be any number of things, and a doctor is the best person to be diagnosing and treating this. You could be contagious with various bacterial infections (strep throat comes to mind) and passing them along to others you you come into contact with, so it is best you get a medical professional’s advice on this.

(untreated strep infections can cause other damage down the road…again ask you doctor about this). :hug3:

I got my throat blessed as a teenager during a Mass for Feast of St. Blaise…it was the first time I got strep throat right after! LOL. Probably a lot of very sick people all packed into that church…

This is not to discourage you from any kind of blessing or going to a healing Mass or anything. To the contrary, I would encourage you to do so.

I am like that other poster, too, though. I am worried for you. You may need antibiotics. Please see a doctor if you can. I believe in God’s direct healing, but where do doctors get their skills from? From the One who made the Universe…God. God made everything so therefore He is the creator of the ability to reason and think and have the skill to heal people. So accepting help from a doctor is an indirect way to receive healing from God, since the doctor would not have the skill to heal you if God had not created it and the doctor first.

My record for laryngitis is 2 months with 6 weeks of that being total. I can empahtize with having a painful throat that will not allow a person to swallow. I had a pneunmonic virus that settled in my larynyx. During that time, the only thing I ate was honey toast with lemon tea. If your problem is caused by a virus, antibiotics will not help. It will simply need to run its course. This is a diagnosis that only a doctor can make.
As others have suggested, make the appointment, “for the doctor too prays to the Lord that his diagnosis may be correct and that you may be healed.”
St. Blaise is known for healing a young boy choking on a fishbone. It is for this reason throats are blessed on his feast day.

You may want to take a drive down to the local ER this evening, you sound pretty sick. And there are some serious infections out there including MRSA where it is advisable to take pretty prompt action on.

I’ve been seriously thinking about this the kiddos and I have been sick the whole month of December, colds, running noses, sore throats, etc, and I am sick of it…so I was thinking Holy Water…hum?

With a fever of 103*, you need to get to the doctor. Now. Or the ER, since this is Friday evening.
Do not be embarrassed to call your pastor. Yes, yes, I am Methodist; but I have a bad throat & I know how sick it can make you. Call, and don’t be worried about being “weird”. Part of a pastor’s calling is the care of the sick.

I’ve been seriously thinking about this the kiddos and I have been sick the whole month of December, colds, running noses, sore throats, etc, and I am sick of it…so I was thinking Holy Water…hum?

I had a really bad sore throat once, and after having taken medicine for a week and missing classes and canceling dates, I took a sip of holy water from my little bottle…the next day, I was completely better! Coincidence? I think not.

Later, though, someone told me this was an inappropriate use of holy water. The word sacreligious came up. I’m still unsure about the accuracy of that statement, and haven’t sipped holy water since.

Please go see a doctor if you haven’t already. Since you’ve been sick for so long, I wonder if you might have mono?? It can produce an incredibly sore throat. Hope you feel better soon!

The usual viral infections, colds, flu, and the like usually run their course in a relatively short time. When one starts talking in terms of several weeks it is often a secondary bacterial infection. Mono and such are accompanied by painful swollen lymph nodes in the groin and neck, etc. Mono is a longer term viral thing that usually only gets worse and hangs on until the infected person gets serious bed rest for several weeks. Getting really active too soon can bring some types of infection roaring back. Pneumonia or pneumenitus is one of those.
