I am trying to answer all the questions of a gentleman I met recently. He is a good man of faith and comes from the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He is seeking the truth and has asked me questions over the past 2 months or so. Recently he sent me a list and I am unable to get to them right away so I was hoping maybe bringing him here to the forums may help him get more of his answers. If you answer please leave your source as he likes to learn from the source and not someones opinion. Thank you guys!!!

14. Who has more authority? God or the church? In a sense, the question really is, How do we interpret the words, “Whatever you shall bind on Earth shall be bound in Heaven”?

Probably the best answer is God always have more authority, but he’s withhholding judgment while the Church exercises judgment with the aid of the Holy Spirit.

15. Do you believe that the church sees itself as baptize paganism? I don’t understand the question?

Joe is right, most of these are loaded questions that indicate that the person asking is not really sincere about the answers. He just wants to trap you.

I have been in the place many times, so let me share my tactic with you.

First, stick to one question and one alone. I aways say something like:
‘Gosh, those are some really great, deep questions. If I am going to do justice to the answers, we really need to start with the one about the Bible and changing the sabbath to Sunday.’

Now you have shifted the direction from many questions to just one. I chose the sabbath question because there is the underlying belief that the bible alone is the sole source of instruction for Christians. Ask him if he believes that. When he says yes, ask him where in the bible does it say that bible alone is the sole source of faith for Christians. Ask if we didn’t have an established canon until almost 400 years after the death of Christ, how did people know what to do? Ask him what the people in Acts were doing. Were they reading the bible or listening to the apostles teaching?

And finally, when all else fails with SDA, I go to abortion. Ask him if it is ok. Then ask what his church teaches about it. See if he says this, from the SDA website,
Guidelines on Abortion:
4) The Church does not serve as conscience for individuals; however, it should provide moral guidance. Abortions for reasons of birth control, gender selection, or convenience are not condoned by the Church. Women, at times however, may face exceptional circumstances that present serious moral or medical dilemmas, such as significant threats to the pregnant woman’s life, serious jeopardy to her health, severe congenital defects carefully diagnosed in the fetus, and pregnancy resulting from rape or incest. The final decision whether to terminate the pregnancy or not should be made by the pregnant woman after appropriate consultation. She should be aided in her decision by accurate information, biblical principles, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, these decisions are best made within the context of healthy family relationships.

Consulting with the Holy Spirit as to whether or not to kill your child? That is the single article that just blows me away.

Hope this helps!

16. Does the priest have more power than God? God has more power than the priest.

17. Does the church teach that the pope is Jesus Christ Himself? No. The question which is absurd sounhds like its a set-up against which the questionner is going to contrast an absurdly-interpreted Catechism answer.

18. Does the Church want the USA to be identacle to her government? I don’t understand the question.

19. Do you believe that priest should join Masonic Lodges? No. The Masons definitely teach opposition to the Catholic Church in the initiation rituals.

20. Did the Bible or Peter change the day of worship from Sabbath to Sunday? The Bible can’t “do” anything. The Book of Acts functionally records the change, though. The change may or may not have been brought about by Peter. Who knows?

21. Who is responsible for the big bang theory? Do you mean that Big Bang theory that’s not inconsistent with good theology?

22. What bible did the Catholic Church use in the dark ages? Well, it commissioned Jerome to make a Latin translation of OT Hebrew and Greek books and NT Greek books. I don’t know how much use the Latin Vulgate saw in the Dark Ages, though.

**23. Can the Pope do everything that God can do? ** I’m pretty sure God can do more than the Pope.

  1. Do you believe that Sunday is the Mark of the Catholic Church?
In the Nicene Creed there are four Marks (characteristics) that identify the Catholic Church as the one uniquely founded by Jesus Christ Himself. These Marks are One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.

The Catholic Church is seen as One because there is unity of doctrine, unity of worship primarily in the Sacraments, and unity of government under one head. Its founder is the One God Who is Truth.

The Catholic Church is seen as Holy because it witnesses with fidelity to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Whose Holy Presence continues within the Church.

The Catholic Church is seen as Catholic because the Greek roots of the term “catholic” mean universal in the sense of wholeness or totality. Primarily the Catholic Church is Catholic because Jesus Christ is wholly and totally present in the Eucharist. The Church is also seen as Catholic or universal in that it safeguards all truth in all ages.

The Catholic Church is seen as Apostolic because it is a single Church founded by Jesus Christ. It exists today through the succession of the Popes beginning with St. Peter. The whole Church is Apostolic in that all its members, including us, share in the mission of the Apostles to establish the Kingdom of God for all.

Hi, Granny.

Giving an answer like this may be like asking a gorilla to sip tea from a cup – not referring to you, GaryLCox, but to the SDA who asked the questions.

Hi, Granny.

Giving an answer like this may be like asking a gorilla to sip tea from a cup .
The hypothetical opinion above is not my opinion. All human beings are worthy of profound respect and should be offered the opportunity to recognize the Catholic Church as founded by Jesus Christ.

Hi every body.
May God bless you all in you labors.
I am the guy that asked Mr. Cox the questions. I asked these questions because I found that most Catholics are not informed as to what they believe. I do not say that disrespectfully, I am a very respectful person and I would like to be treated that way. I had asked Mr. Cox if he could give me quotations for his response so I could look it up. These few months I have found a lot of things but it is not what you guys are telling me.
I was looking for some quotes that I could look up to see for myself if it is so. What I was looking for was sources from prominent catholic authors, priest (that has something to do with the Vatican) the reason for that is because if he does not have anything to do with the Vatican he most likely will say the same thing you are saying, and that is not what the high church officials says. They should know.
If you have something that contradicts what I have found please make sure it comes from credible officials.
All of the sources that I am quoting are high and public officials of the church that I don’t think any Good Catholic can discredit.
Thank you very much and God bless.

These are the answer that I have found.
If I misunderstood anything in my post please point them out to me but not with personal opinions. Please give me something I can verify. Thank you.
  1. Code:
Do you believe that the holy Catholic Church teaches that there is one way to get to heaven?
This is a loaded question. No matter how lengthy and well-crafted a response you give, I imagine, the simple answer that he may retort with “Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life”. Of course this is true, but the question still remains: "How does Jesus choose to operate to save us?" Of course, first, He died for us. But then He left us with the Catholic Church to whom He entrusted the Sacraments as a means of tapping into the power of the Cross.
Salvation is by Mary – that is what Pope Pius IX said:
  1. … Great indeed is Our trust in Mary. The resplendent glory of her merits, far exceeding all the choirs of angels, elevates her to the very steps of the throne of God.[1] Her foot has crushed the head of Satan. Set up between Christ and His Church,[2] Mary, ever lovable and full of grace, always has delivered the Christian people from their greatest calamities and from the snares and assaults of all their enemies, ever rescuing them from ruin.
Personal note: “Jesus is who was to crash the head of the serpent, not Mary. Genesis 3:15 says: it shall bruise thy head and thou shall bruise HIS heel. Not HER heel.
Also Jesus and God the father is depicted as angry and eager to hurt us if Mary does not stop them. But Jesus said: At that day ye shall ask in my name: an I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. (St. John 16:26, 27) he does not have to save us from the father because the Father loves us also. Do you think that God the Father sent Jesus to die for us because he wants to hurt us? No it is because he loves us as much as he loves his son. We will rain in heaven as sons of God with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. that is what the bible is all about.”
  1. And likewise in our own day, Mary, with the ever merciful affection so characteristic of her maternal heart, wishes, through her efficacious intercession with God, to deliver her children from the sad and grief-laden troubles, from the tribulations, the anxiety, the difficulties, and the punishments of God’s anger which afflict the world because of the sins of men. Wishing to restrain and to dispel the violent hurricane of evils which, as We lament from the bottom of Our heart, are everywhere afflicting the Church, Mary desires to transform Our sadness into joy. The foundation of all Our confidence, as you know well, Venerable Brethren, is found in the Blessed Virgin Mary. For, God has committed to Mary the treasury of all good things, in order that everyone may know that through her are obtained every hope, every grace, and all salvation. For this is His will, that we obtain everything through Mary.[3]

  1. Do you believe that the Catholic Church teaches that YOU are God and Christ?
This seems to be a rather insulting insinuation. Yes, God created us in His image and likeness. Yes, we are members of the Mystical Body of Christ (see 1 Cor. 13). But, no, we are not literally God. Does that even need to be said? The presumption that any person, let alone the Catholic Church as a whole, could believe that we “are God and Christ” is ridiculous.
Personal note: I’m sory it was not my intention to sound insulting. it was not my intention. please forgive me. the question was base on what i found.

“For the son of God became man so that we could become God.” “The only begotten son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumes our nature, so that he, might make men Gods.” Page 129
“Marvel and rejoice: we have become Christ” page 228
Catechism of the Catholic Church (New York: Image Books. 1995 edition)
  1. Code:
Do you believe that the pope follows the Holy Scripture?
Of course.
Jesuit catechism
Q. what if the Holly scripture commands one thing and the pope another contrary to it?
A. The holly scripture must be thrown aside.

  1. Code:
Do you believe that the pope has the power to change time and laws and even the precepts of Christ?
Again, this is a loaded question with insulting innuendo. The Pope has the authority granted to him by Christ Himself. No more. No less. The Pope has the authority to change certain laws and precepts (whether or not to have married priests, for example), but he does not have the authority to change the moral law (declaring that murder is no longer sinful, for example).
“The pope has power to change times, to abrogate laws, and to dispense with all things, even the precepts of Christ.”
Decretal De Translat. Espiscop. Cap
  1. Code:
Do you believe that Sunday is the Mark of the Catholic Church?
I’m not sure what this question is even asking. There are four marks of the Church: One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. The Church calls Sunday “The Lord’s Day” because that is the day Jesus rose from the dead, the eighth day, the day of our re-creation. This has been so from the time of the Apostles.
“Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act… the act is a MARK of her ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters”
Letter, Oct. 28, 1895, from C. F. Thomas, Chancellor of Cardinal Gibbons

“But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify.”
James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of our Fathers, 88th ed., pp. 89.
  1. Code:
Do you believe the Church is above the Word of God?
Another loaded question. There is no way to answer the question directly without coming off badly, but you are under no obligation to directly answer a disingenuous question. When the Church uses the term “Word of God” She is referring either to Jesus (the Logos of John 1:1) or else to the unity of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Non-Catholics tend to use the phrase interchangeably with the Bible, which is a mistake. The Church is the guardian of the deposit of faith. The Catholic Church produced and codified Sacred Scripture.
Sunday is our MARK of authority… The church is above the bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.”
Catholic Record. September 1, 1923
  1. Code:
Who is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords? And who sits on the judgment seat with God?
Jesus. What does he expect you to say?
Jesuit Catechism
Q. Who is the Pope?
A. He is the vicar of Christ, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords and there is but one judgment-seat belonging to God and the Pope.

Note: if he sits with God and equal with God i would say he is a God?
  1. Code:
     Can Christianity and evolution merge?
Again, I’m not sure what he means by this as it’s not a very well-phrased question. What he probably means is "Are Christianity and evolution compatible?” The answer to this is “It depends” and “It hasn’t been clearly defined yet.” Good Catholics are free to disagree on this. However, what we cannot disagree on is that we all descended from one couple who were created by God (either instantly or through the process of evolution), and our first parents were given souls (made human) at one particular moment in time.
“Humani Generis,” John Paul wrote, “considered the doctrine of ‘evolutionism’ as a serious hypothesis, worthy of a more deeply studied investigation…Today…new knowledge leads us to recognize that the theory of evolution is more than a hypothesis.” Pius was skeptical of evolution but tolerated study and discussion of it; the statement by John Paul reflects the church’s acceptance of evolution. He did not, however, diverge at all from Pius on the question of the origin of man’s soul: that comes from God, even if “the human body is sought in living material which existed before it.”

Personal Note: I have read some post on different web sites that states that people misunderstood the pope words. That can happen sometimes, and it is clearly stating that, it is a possibility. Every one can try to explain what he meant to say all they want but the fact of the mater is that He said it, not them. From what I can gather, that statement created quit a stir in the community. So we can’t say that He was not aware of the implications. If there was a misunderstanding He should have corrected it. I don’t thing it would have cost anything to correct that and set the record strait. I think he meant exactly what he said.
Well evolution and creation is 2 totally opposite religion. that’s right: evolution is a religion. You would need to have more faith to believe in evolution than what you would need to believe in creation.
Creation teaches that death came after sin. For evolution to occur, something must die. And if things were dying before sin then God is a liar.

Psalm 33:6, 9 says:
By the word of the lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
For he speak, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

It stood fast, there is nothing fast about Evolution.
May I humbly respectfully recommend that you read what evolution teaches before trying to put those 2 religions in the same box.
Christianity teaches that man came from an intelligent creator; Evolution teaches we came from rain falling on a rock. Both require faith to believe in them.
Two very, very different religions.
