Can I Go See A Movie on Sunday?

This Sunday, I will probably be going to see the Minion Movie with my cousin, her boyfriend, and my sister. Would it be sinful for me to go see the Minion Movie on Sunday? Otherwise I will have to tell her I cannot go because I am uncomfortable seeing a movie on a Sunday.

I will probably be attending 10:30 Divine Liturgy at my church, and then eat lunch. Later in the afternoon or evening I would then probably go to see the movie.

Maybe I am being scrupulous?

We see movies frequently on a Sunday. It’s far less crowded then! But as far as Minions goes, haven’t heard good reviews

As long as you also go to church, I don’t think there’s anything wrong in seeing a movie on Sunday. I even had a priest tell me it was ok to do housework and go to the laundromat on Sundays. If it’s that particular movie that concerns you, just check the rating.

No, it is not right to do this on Sunday. Paying to see a movie is engaging in commerce and you are working by driving to the movies.

The only way I can see going to the movies on Sunday is having someone else drive and pay for the movie/pop corn and as such. Then you are not working or engaging in commerce.

I would not be the one driving. I do have Gold and Silver AMC passes that I would use. I guess that counts as me paying for the movie. I’ll have to say I’m uncomfortable going on a Sunday and that’s it.

Do you walk to Mass or does someone drive you? If you want to get this scrupulous, getting out of bed and getting dressed is work, as is brushing your teeth or for that matter, opening your eyes. You and the OP both need to speak to a priest

Go to church, lunch and then enjoy this time with your family. I saw a movie on a Sunday this year…it was my birthday and I had wanted to see one. I saw the movie FROZEN on a Sunday…with my very devout Catholic brother, sister in law and three of their children.

Are we supposed to just sit on our hands and stare at a blank wall on Sunday?

Btw, I once had a job where I had to work Sunday and I hated that…but it was not retail, so no commerce took place.

I walk to and from mass on Sunday from home. At times, I go on Saturday, so I do not have to leave home on Sunday.

Yes, I brush my teeth, and wash my face. This is permitted on Sunday. And no this does not going against Catholic teachings.

Not being scrupulous here, however certain actives are not permitted on Sunday. However, there are ways around it, and I have provided them for this particular circumstance.

Orthodox Jews might have problems fitting a movie in on Saturday, but you are fine. Go see the movie.

Ok, now seeing a therapist because of this is extreme, and unnecessary and you asked a very good question and have legitimate concerns.

If you want to go to the movies and be with your family, that is nice, but take the necessary precautions. As long as you do not have to fork over any cash, then use those special tickets. Or, you can buy the tickets and whatever else a day or two before, then use them on Sunday. Thus, not engaging in commerce on Sunday. However, this is a gray area and would not recommend this practice regularly. But once in awhile, sure live on the wild side a little.

A therapist might be a good idea also.
I also think you should ask yourself why you don’t want to talk to your own priest. That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me- that is his “job”.
If you are uncomfortable talking to someone in your own parish, is there another close by where you could go? While I think a mental health counselor is a good idea, having someone who can help with your spiritual growth is also very important.

I would be seeing a therapist because of my scrupulosity, not just because of this situation. I do not want my whole family to know that I am seeing a therapist. My mother is the only person (besides God the Father, Jesus, Blessed Mother, Angels, Saints, others in Heaven) that knows about my scrupulosity and my struggles. I came to this website hoping to get help, and I do appreciate all the responses that I get. But then I say “Oh I am better now” and then I say I do not need a therapist. But, maybe I should just go and try to get this under control.

I totally agree with the spiritual growth part, but I have no idea who I could go to. There are some priests I know ans have talked to, but it would be pretty difficult for me to meet with them in person. Regularly meeting would be very difficult.

Again, this is not Catholic teaching. You are doing more harm than good for this poster, who is obviously young, and not well versed in what the Church teaches.

I suggest that you check the catechism and the compendium which are available here before you post any more on the subject.

She probably does not feel comfortable going to the priest because he is very busy and she does not want to trouble him with something so trivial or better yet reveal to the priest what she plans to do on Sunday.

It is fine to talk to some to get different perspective on yourself and as such. However, there is nothing wrong with trying to discipline yourself, living a strict lifestyle. It is actually quite nobel.
