Please help! I went to confession yesterday and after a long confession the last thing I mentioned was some depraved thoughts that I had had. I was embarassed and didn’t want the priest to think that I was depraved and needed help so I said oh you know there is so much of this stuff in the news and in the newspapers (as if I was so influenced by the media!} which is not true. What?! I I basically didn’t want to look bad with the priest and was definitely being prideful. He gave me absolution which I didn"t really hear or wasn’t paying attention. After i was in the pew I wondered whether I should go back and tell him I was prideful and making excuses. Went ahead and asked an older deacon who was there if it was O.K. that #1 if I was absolved if I didn’t hear it and #2 that if I was downplaying and making excuses for the sin should. I go back and talk to the priest ? He said not to worry about it and that I was fine. What do you think can I go to Communion tomorrow. Thanks P.S. now that I think about it I told the priests other thoughts that another priest told me that I should confess but I told the priest that I get different responses from different priests about whether I should confess or not. The point was that even in that instance I had to defend myself. Didn’t mention this instance to deacon occurred to me now. what do you think still o.k. for Communion. Thanks

Hi. You do not have to tell what your thought is. For the Confession to be valid, you just mention what kind of thought it is. Is it impure thought? Lustful thought? Jealous thought? Murderous thought that wanting to do injury to others, etc.

Am not really sure what was happening during your Confession, but if Father said it was ok, then it was. Perhaps you had revealed what kind of thought you had, which was enough for the purpose of Confession.

Have a blessed Easter!

Trying to “defend yourself” in confession may be less than appropriate, but is nothing to obsess over. Confess sins in number and kind, avoid unnecessary detail and commentary. Listen to the priest, he will ask for more detail if necessary.
