I have been studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church and attending Mass every Sunday and every holy day of obligation for 15 months. I accept the Nicene Creed. I was baptized as an infant in the United Methodist Church, so I am told baptism is not necessary for me in coming into full communion with the Catholic Church. May I go to my first confession and take holy Communion? I understand I have to have confirmation from the bishop of my diocese, but I am just wondering if I can go to confession and take Communion.

Ordinarily, you must be received into the Catholic Church before you can receive Communion or the other sacraments. Confession is done in immediate anticipation of reception into the Church. I recommend you talk to your pastor. If he determines that you are ready to be received into the Church, then you may go to confession and receive (not “take”) Communion.
