Can I make my own statue of a saint?

I recently wanted to have a small statue of St. Michael in my home, but was shocked when I discovered prices online and even in my own parish were very expensive. I have a supply of molding clay in my home. Is it proper for me to mold and carve my own St. Michael statue and have it blessed by a priest?
