I was asked to say the blessing over the dinner at my niece’s wedding. She is a Catholic, who is NOT getting married in the Catholic church and has NOT gotten a dispensation from the Church to marry outside of it.
I told them that I can not participate in the ceremony as it is not valid. However I was asked to just say the blessing over the food at the reception dinner. I said that the reception is an extension of the ceremony and by doing this it may be putting my stamp of approval on it.
What is the Church’s position on my participation in this event and it’s celebration?
