Our daughter, a baptized Catholic, is 18. She seemed to lose interest in her faith at about 15 and opted not to go through confirmation. She moved in with her boyfriend when she was 17, in spite of our protests. Legally we couldn’t stop her. Now, she’s pregnant and plans to marry this guy (born a Lutheran, although not too serious about it – his family is) after the baby is born in February.
If she marries this guy without going through Catholic marriage preparation and without a Catholic-sanctioned wedding, am I allowed to attend? I am convinced that I am not, and my wife, who is a convert to Catholicism, says she will attend regardless.
I think my daughter wants to do the “right thing,” by getting married but not necessarily by our Church’s rules. She has shown signs in the past that she would like to come back to the Chruch fully. I’d like to show her your answer, and I’d also like to know whether I can even participate in her wedding if she gets married outside the church in a Lutheran ceremony.
Please help!
