I have already received the priest’s first blessing at his first Mass in July. I will attend another first Mass tomorrow for same priest. Is it appropriate to receive another blessing? I don’t know my TLM etiquette!🤷

I’m a little bewildered.

If his first Mass was in July, how is he having another first Mass in December?

I’m also confused. If the priest has had his first Mass that’s it. Any subsequent Mass cannot be another first Mass.

My only experience is with this first Mass as done by the ICRSP. Any Mass done in the different locations by the priest is also considered a first Mass during this first year of being a priest. I don’t know why it is done this way, but it is. I am not mistaken, as I know the priest. So I guess you don’t know the answer, but thanks.

I would definitely ask the priest about it, contact the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (perhaps via there website–I’m sure there’s an email addresses provided–you might even just try contacting their vocations director–I’m sure he deals with first Mass stuff quite often). It wouldn’t be wrong for you to receive a second-first blessing or anything… it’s not like it’d be sinful or anything–I just don’t know about the etiquette part of it----seems like quite a rare situation to me–there may be no proper etiquette on it.

I’ve never heard of this custom. I do know that traditionally there are special blessing that come with assisting at the first Liturgy of a neopresbyter.

But apparently this is a privilege of the ICRSP.

Just to wrap this topic up, the priest himself assured me that I could receive a second “first blessing” which I did accept quite joyfully.

Technically, it should be noted that the ordination itself is the priest’s first mass when he concelebrates with the bishop. What you are referring to would be a Mass of Thanksgiving which is often called a first mass.

I’m wondering if the question is about receiving the plenary indulgence for devoutly assisting at a priest’s “first Mass before the people on a chosen day”. (Manual of Indulgences n. 27 under Other Concessions)

§ 1.47 Plenaria indulgentia conceditur
1° sacerdoti primam Missam coram populo statuto die celebranti,
2° christifidelibus qui devote eidem Missae astiterint.

The wording, at least in English, is very odd. It seems to imply an indulgence for assisting the first Mass a priest say each day, but the second half of the concession is about Masses on the priest’s anniversary of ordination. So, I think it’s safe to say it’s referring to the priest’s first Mass.

This may be the source of the “first Mass” (primam Missam) terminology as well.
