Can I receive an indulgence while in the state of mortal sin if I go to Confession either that day or another day? Or are all the merits denied? As an example, doing the Stations of the Cross which offers a plenary indulgence (more likely partial) and then going to Confession either later that day or another day.

NO, the merits of prayers, sacrifices and charity only apply to State of Grace Souls. Although I read somewhere that these acts can merit the graces after a Good Sacramental Confession; but don’t recall where I read it.

GET TO CONFESSION: call your priest and make an appointment ASAP

May the HS guide your path

I didn’t think so but someone told me that a few weeks ago. It didn’t sound correct and I meant to ask the priest at my last confession but forgot.

Thanks.

I think one of the prerequisites for obtaining an indulgence is to be in a state of grace. In a state of mortal sin, doesn’t qualify. Then again, one of the prerequisites is also confession within a specified time frame. Possible one could perform the act which offers the indulgence and go to confession subsequently and gain the grace of the indulgence. Not really sure, suggest you ask a priest.
