If I have been going to confession frequently over the past few years, but I just now realized for the first time that there is a mortal sin that I have forgotten to confess. Because I had this realization, have I fallen out of a state of grace? What is the Church’s teaching on these kind of realizations?
I know that when we make our confession, we ask for forgiveness for all the sins we have mentioned, as well as the ones that we have committed that we may have forgotten to mention. Since I asked for that forgiveness multiple times in the past, including the last time I went to confession, is that sin which I forgot to confess forgiven? Or by the realization that I had forgotten to confess this, have I now lost my state of grace? Obviously I will be going to confession as soon as I can to confess this, but in the meantime am I allowed to receive the Eucharist?
Any help or insight on this question would be greatly appreciated!
