Can I receive Communion if I'm late to Mass?

Is there anything in canon law that forbids us from receiving Comunion if we came five minutes to Mass? I attend Mass daily and today, for the first time in my life, the priest refused to give me Communion because I walked in five minutes late to daily Mass. The Gospel reading was not done yet so I missed the first reading.
