My husband and I are both cradle Catholics, but fell away from the Church for a while. During that time we were married in the Catholic church by a priest who lived by the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Consequently, although we were living together at the time, he didn’t ask, so we didn’t tell. He did urge us to go to confession prior to our wedding, but I know neither of us did. Therefore, we were in a state of mortal sin when we were married. I have since come back to the Church and confessed these prior sins, but I don’t think my husband has, although he does attend mass somewhat regularly.
What effect does our being in a state of mortal sin have on our marriage and can it be rectified?
(References to the Catechism or other writings would be helpful as my husband does not believe the a failure to go to confession (since he was sorry for this sin at the time of our wedding) was really necessary.)
