My husband and I are both cradle Catholics, but fell away from the Church for a while. During that time we were married in the Catholic church by a priest who lived by the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Consequently, although we were living together at the time, he didn’t ask, so we didn’t tell. He did urge us to go to confession prior to our wedding, but I know neither of us did. Therefore, we were in a state of mortal sin when we were married. I have since come back to the Church and confessed these prior sins, but I don’t think my husband has, although he does attend mass somewhat regularly.
What effect does our being in a state of mortal sin have on our marriage and can it be rectified?

(References to the Catechism or other writings would be helpful as my husband does not believe the a failure to go to confession (since he was sorry for this sin at the time of our wedding) was really necessary.)

This is the first marriage for both of you?

If so, then you’re fine. Your marriage is both valid and Sacramental. As far as I know, we don’t have to abstain from marital relations if one or both are in a state of mortal sin.

(You would have to abstain from receiving the Eucharist, but not from marital relations.)

I would be more concerned about the affects of being in a state of mortal sin and still receiving Holy Communion has on his SOUL!!

He needs to get to confession and get this right. Worry about his soul and getting him to heaven - that’s your job as his spouse.

Once you go to confession and include that you received this Sacrament lacking the grace (mortal sin) needed, you will then reveive the grace’s of the Sacramental marriage. You will then get pregnant 😃 , JK.

I would recommend listening to THIS - it’s not long, and may help him to understand the Sacrament of Confession.

I guess I need to be a little more specific. The CCC says (more or less) that sacraments bestow graces, and to receive the fruits of the grace you have to be properly disposed. I’m not exactly sure what the fruits of the sacrament of marriage are, but it seems like we would not be entitled to them.
I am worried about his not going to confession, but I wanted to start here for both our sakes.

You can recieve no Sacramental Graces while in the state of Mortal Sin. That said. the Sacrament of Reconcillation restores all Grace that the person might have. If you have been Confirmed, you get the Grace of Confirmation restored.

And thus, since you seem to have a valid marriage, you have the Grace of Marriage restored when you recieve absolution.
