This afternoon my younger sister and I got into an arguement. Sadly I let my temper get the better of me and I yelled at her, we’ve both apologized now and forgave eachother but I am worried that maybe I can’t get communion tomorrow? Wouldn’t being mean to your sister count against the commandment “thou shall not kill?” I didn’t curse at her or anything and no one is holding any grudges but still I am not sure if this is a mortal sin or not…Obviously I didn’t plan to get mad at my sister, we were both just being stubborn 😛 But it is challenging to control my temper so I am wondering can I still get Communion at church tommorow?

I do not think that you should consider this a mortal sin. I also think that you should do some reading about what is a venial and what is a mortal sin.

If in doubt don’t be afraid to go to confession because even though I consider your fault venial confession strengthens you against committing venial sins.

God Bless

A good question to ask you would be when was the last time you were at confession? We are all sinners none of us go a day without at least committing one sin .It is proper to go to confession on a regular basis. You did not curse and I did not read anything about hitting involved . People are allowed to argue . Of course there should be nothing wrong with you going and receiving at mass Sunday. Remember to say and mean this part of our prayers at mass "Lord I am not worthy to receive you but only say the word and I shall be healed ".
God Bless you and if you want to know more about the faith visit my blog www.defendingthefaith-frankie.blogspot.com

Thanks guys. I go to confession once a month but sometimes I think it is not enough, I guess I have the scruples 😛 Thank you, now I can get communion without worrying 😃

I recommend the book Frequent Confession by Benedict Bauer. He has a lot of practical advice for examining your conscience and distinguishing moral and venial sin. He even talks about categories of venial sin and gives different approaches for dealing with them.

If I were to receive communion in a Catholic Church I would have to talk to the priest first.

I think the key here is the fact that you each have forgiven one another. It is a good practise to examine your conscience nightly and to pray a good act of contrition after commiting a sin and in your nightly prayers. I would still confess this sin the next time you go to confession because it is obviously bothering your conscience. I am not a Priest so I cannot tell you if it is mortal - but you should know if it was or wasnt. If I had to guess - it doesnt sould like it. Usually for it to be Mortal it has to be a Grave Sin , like wishing Evil on someone , a hatred , rather than merely the loss of your temper. But all sin is bad because repeated loss of ones temper isnt a good habit to get into as it can lead to hurt feelings and to give bad example. We are to love our neighbor and to turn the other cheek - its always better to strive to get better rather than to tolerate our shortcomings ourselves.

It would have to be a mortal sin to prevent your from receiving Communion.

For it to be mortal:
  1. It is a grave matter
  2. It is committed with full knowledge of the sin
  3. It is committed deliberately
Though I admit to being confused at times about what is a grave matter.

All sins are displeasing to God, but I don’t think your argument would have been considered a mortal sin. However, if you are ever uncertain, it never hurts to consult a priest and confess your sin(s).

If you’re not sure if it’s venial or mortal it wasn’t mortal. For a sin to qualify as mortal it must be committed with “full knowledge.” So if you’re going, was that mortal? – then you do not have full knowledge and it is venial. Still, you should go to reconciliation for anything that is weighing on your conscience. It’s good for you and that’s why the sacrament is there.

Some anger may be momentary, but then you catch yourself and stop. If you continue without resisting, this is where sin begins.

You should be able to decide using this from the Catechism:

CCC 2302 … If anger reaches the point of a deliberate desire to kill or seriously wound a neighbor, it is gravely against charity; it is a mortal sin. …

CCC 2303 … Hatred of the neighbor is a grave sin when one deliberately desires him grave harm. …

From and examination of conscience:
  1. Do you refuse enduring anything contrary to what you want?
  2. Do you allow yourself wrath to anyone that gives you trouble?
  3. Do you allow yourself to proceed in quarrels, injurious language, curses, threats, revenge, or a capacity of exercising it?
  4. Do you refuse to forgive those that have had misunderstandings?
