Hello all

My question is can i recieve the eucharist on chrismas eve and then go to midnight mass and take it there. I heard that you can only recieve commion once a day. would the day restart right at midnight.

Any help would be apprencated

Canon 917 says we may receive twice in a day as long as the second time is a Mass, and not a ‘special’ event like a wedding, Eucharist brought to the sick, etc.

Well what I mean is i would recieve commion at chrismas eve mass but I would get it at midnight christmas mass my question is since at midnight it is techincal chrisimas would i be allowed to do to take it

Christmas eve Masses, and ‘Midnight Mass’ are vigils to Christmas Mass. Same as a Saturday night Mass being a vigil to normal Sunday Mass. Just because it will be after midnight that you receive, does not mean that you received once on Tuesday and once on Wednesday.

But don’t fret! It IS permissible to receive twice on the same day! So go to your Christmas Eve Mass & receive, then come later to midnight Mass & receive.

But if you attend Mass tomorrow, do not receive.

Of course, you may.

You could receive each time if you went Christmas Eve, Midnight Mass and Mass during the Day. Christmas Eve Mass is on one day, Midnight Mass and the Day Mass are on a different day.

Well, no, it means you received once on Wednesday and once on Thursday. Midnight Mass, if indeed it starts at midnight, takes place on Christmas Day. It’s not a vigil of Christmas – there is a Christmas Vigil which is totally different Mass and is celebrated only on December 24. Some parishes celebrate that one at all Masses before midnight but it seems that most often they celebrate an anticipated Midnight Mass.

There are 3 Christmas Masses: the “Mass during the Night”; the “Mass at Dawn” and the “Mass during the Day”. If celebrated at their proper time they all take place on Christmas Day.

Of course he can receive, he’d be attending 3 Masses on 2 different days. He could receive at all three.

We may receive a second time as long as it’s at a Mass – a Wedding Mass qualifies.

:o :o :o Phemie, thank you. Man, what was I thinking? :o :o :o

My Parish bulletin lists midnight Mass as a vigil. Oooops. But I now see at the USCCB the three different readings, as you say.

I know can917 changed it to twice a day. But if I attend Mass Saturday night, fulfilling my obligation, does this mean I can also attend twice on Sunday morn and receive also? The readings are the same. I was under the impression it is the *same *Mass being celebrated, regardless if they fall within different 24 hour periods, so I could receive twice and not the 3rd time.

And its not a theoretical question - I sometimes do this because of a few ministries I’m involved with & we go to Mass as a group.

Yes, you may receive on Saturday evening and twice again on Sunday, other circumstances being equal. Saturday and Sunday are two different days.
Can. 202 §1. In law, a day is understood as a period consisting of 24 continuous hours and begins at midnight unless other provision is expressly made…

Thanks for the Quote!

Now I’ll need to email my Deacon, who advised differently some time ago when I asked!

He is going to tell you that the canon is not intended to promote to receive twice, because it is not recommended.

Tell him respectfully that he is wrong.

For starters, the one who entered that into the new code was a Dominican priest of the University of Salamanca, May he RIP, that thought that priests have the privilege to celebrate twice in a day, yet the lay can only receive once. So he got that law placed in.

Second, the great St. Julian Eymard told not religious even, but people of the world that if the Church would allow to receive 10 times in a day then to receive 10 times, not because of their piety, but because if one communion a day does wonders, 10 will help those closer to this world of perdition.

So respectfully tell him that you shall continue. Tell him that you know well that it is not receiving more of God, since each particle contains God just the same. That it is simply more time to be together.

If I received on afternoon Saturday Mass. How many times Could I receive on the Sunday Mass. Thanks a lot

Twice

3 points:

1You can receive 2 in a day. A day in canon law is the normal 24 hour day, 12 AM to 12 AM

2 The first time in the day could be in a mass or out (distribution of Holy Communion)
  1. The second must be in a mass. What do they mean by mass? If I get after the sign of the Cross? *Lacuna Legis! *
It does not specify, so the next application is to use an aplication of another law. So therefore you must arrive before the offertory starts to receive.
Got it?

The new code is unspecific as to what part constitutes having assisted. So an older reference is necessary. The old one specified that to fulfill an obligation it is before the the offertory, which was indicated when the deacon removes the veil of the chalice.

The liturgy is always one of the best indicators of how to practice the law.

I’m pretty sure you are being asked to provide the law. I would but I can’t read latin and there is no English translation on line.

Canon 1248 of the 1917 code does not give any details, unless I’ve missed something. The injunction is merely “Festis de praecepto diebus Missa audienda est” . . . "

The rest of that canon treats withdrawal from servile labor and commerce unless a legitimate custom or partticular indult permitted it, etc. (" et abstinendum ab operibus servilibus, actibus forensibus, itemque, nisi aliud ferant legitimae consuetudines aut peculiaria indulta, publico mercatu, nundinis, aliisque publicis emptionibus et venditionibus.")

Here, “audienda est” is merely “must hear.” The elaboration on what this means would be more found in various rescripts or commentaries. Look there rather than in the former code.

However, keep in mind that canon 1247 of the present code puts the obligation as “participating” (“Missam participandi”) and then canon 1248§1 speaks of assistance at a Mass ("Missae assistit ") as the means of satisfying that precept of participation.

there is a translatio of the 1917 CIC online, but I lost the link.

Hi
According to the 1982 Canon Paragraph 917
Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.
One can recieve the second time, as long as it is in the context of the Holy Mass.

And the third time for Viaticum:
Can. 921
§1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.
§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
