I was asked in November 2007 to be a godmother to a friend’s son. Since then, my friend and I are not as close. She seems to resent me for some reason and does not return my attempts to remain friends. I know she is busy (she has four children), but other mutual friends hear from her and I do not. As a result, I hardly know my godson. I am not “allowed” to take him out. I have not been invited to events such as Easter, summer celebrations, etc., when other godparents have. I have exhausted all of my options and do not know what to do. It feels like she does not want me invovled in their lives. Should I resign as godmother so my godson can have a true godmother like his siblings?

No, you cannot “resign” as godmother, in part because you accepted a serious responsibility and in part because you witnessed the child’s baptism in the role of godmother.

Write to your friend and explain your concerns. Share with her your willingness to keep your promise to support her in raising her son in the faith. Ask her for ideas on how you can remain involved in your godson’s life in similar manner to her children’s other godparents. Then the ball is in her court. If she doesn’t answer, leave her and her family alone, but know that you still can offer up prayers and sacrifices for your godson’s spiritual well-being.
