Can I rush consecration to Mary?

I am currently going through the 33 day preparation for Marian Consecration.

I’ve been reading ahead and would like to continue doing so and make my consecration as soon as I finish all the entries.

Would such a thing be prohibited?
 
It’s a private devotion so you may do it however you like. I’m not sure who would prohibit such a thing or why or how.

Yes, this.

There is no “prohibited”. There is what is recommended, by an author, spiritual director or just someone online, and there is what is not recommended.

Our Lady will love your best effort, the most.

I am being consecrated tomorrow (Oct. 7th) on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. We are saying the Rosary prior to Mass then our Bishop will lead us in the consecration prayer. I took it one day at a time because I’ve never done it before and honestly, I was mostly ignorant when it came to Mary so I had a lot of information to absorb and had to meditate on it.

This was absolutely the best way for me to be consecrated but if you feel you do not need the full 33 days, there is nothing that can or should stop you.

I read a lot of articles prior to starting my consecration and the consensus was that some people “get it” right away and some people don’t…for some it takes 3,4 or even 5 times to fully appreciate and grasp it.
 
I have already consecrated myself to Mary … however I am going to do a re-consecration this year on the Immaculate Conception, December 8.

In preparing for this I found a wonderful book entitled “God Alone” … it is the collected writings of St. Louis Marie de Montfort.

The book contains not only The True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, but also has a very nice book entitled The Secret of the Rosary … I do believe that in consecrating ourselves to Mary that we should take a longer look at the devotion to the holy Rosary … the book also contains many other writings.

My priest just told me that my consecration was probably invalid because I rushed my way through the book 😦
 
I know nothing about this devotion, but my question is why would you want to?

If it is written that it should take so many days, then that’s what it takes. Why would you think you could do it faster? What is the benefit?

The purpose of spiritual practices is to grow in virtue. Growth takes time.

Marian consecration is not a Sacrament. There isn’t really a valid or invalid to it. It’s all about pledging yourself to Jesus through Mary. A preparation period helps with that, but it isn’t required, because again, this is a private devotion. Think about it–a preparation process isn’t necessary for a Sacrament to be valid, so why would it be necessary for a sacramental to be valid? (Whatever validity means with reference to sacramentals).

You have received excellent counsel from the other priest who is participating in this thread. I will just add the following points.
  1. The total consecration has an elaborated preparation in order to prepare spiritually as well as catechetically.for the lifetime commitment one is undertaking in this gift of self and act of entrustment. It is not magical, however, and one can certainly increase as well as decrease the preparatory phase.
  2. I can only presume, by what you relate from the priest, that he perhaps considers that your preparation was not equal to realising the full fruit of the consecration or that he is concerned that you did not internalise the ramification of the consecration in all its effects for your life. Since he knows you and I do not, I am hesitant to offer any commentary other than to refer you back to him for his advice. Certainly, something of this sort should not be done without careful thought and reflection and an understanding of what it means as well as what it does not mean…and all of its implications, which are far reaching. I made the consecration decades ago and it was, is, and shall always be foundational to my entire my spiritual life.
  3. You may wish to read de Montfort’s “The Secret of Mary” wherein he treats of how, having made the consecration, it is important then to live the spirituality for the rest of one’s life. It is not “just another devotion.”
