I have struggled for the last 10 years with smoking marijuana
I have recently Given my life to Christ and I see this as a stumbling block in my life
My friend who is also a devout catholic has told me it isn’t a sin to partake in it since it is helping my mental health, although I have never had issues with mental health problems
I see it as a sin as this prevents me from coming to God in my problems
Is his advice sound in the matter?
Thank you in advance
-Joshua

If you see it as a stumbling block, then it is a stumbling block. His advice is not sound if you see it as something that keeps you from coming to God. I think you should get help if you need to, to stop.

Sorry, but there’s no way that directly breathing the smoke from a burning plant can be anything but unhealthy.

Edibles, on the other hand . . .

Yeah besides the health issues I’m more focused on what it appears to do with my relationship with God, I know for some using it medically for cancer and such might be beneficial but I had no use for it but to escape my problems.
I know prayer does much more than that.

Well, now that you have acknowledged that, it may make it easier to stop. Get new habits to replace smoking. Daily mass if you can, adoration, say a decade of the rosary instead of smoking.

That’s great!

According to the Catechism, drug usage, except when strictly medicinal, is a mortal sin.
Then every one drinking a beer or two at an NFL football game is a mortal sinner?? Alcohol is the world’s leading drug. Might you want to rethink your statement? And are you sure you are reading the CCC correctly, or a little too liberally? After all, we use wine at mass.

I agree with what you are saying, but that isn’t what the OP is asking. That is a discussion for another thread.

Then I might suggest the statement about drug usage and mortal sin be a little better qualified. As it is written, drug usage is a mortal sin by the CCC. Alcohol is a drug. Using alcohol for non medicinal purposes is a mortal sin according to the post. I have to think it needs more clarification.

No, I don’t think your friend’s advice in this case is sound. If you’ve struggled with it for 10 years, then you are in bondage to it. God doesn’t want you to be a slave to anything. I say follow your gut and leave it in the past.

It’s a tough issue and I don’t want to pretend I know what God, who created the naturally growling plant, would say about it. The Church makes statements on drugs but the people making the statements likely really know nothing about marijuana particularly as it comes to first hand experience. I am quite familiar with it and I would suggest that one who has never tried it not bother. I consider whether smoking it is mortally sinful or not and over the years have realized it probably can be. It makes me an incompetent singer unable to distinguish pitch generally. I don’t think it’s possible to be all one can be as a pothead… yet had I never tried it I doubt I’d have considered thinking myself worth the time of taking singing lessons. It probably has its uses.

Does smoking the wacky weed affect your relationship with God? With your family? Does it affect your ability to provide for your family and yourself? Does it affect your physical and/or mental health?

Basically, it can be enjoyed in moderation in places where it is legal or prescribed. Note I say that not because the substance is dangerous, it is a rather benign substance and is less dangerous than alcohol, however the risk involved where it is illegal causes one to answer Yes to more than one of the questions above.

I would think of it like you do of alcohol. If you are addicted, and it affects your ability to fulfill your daily responsibilities, or you no longer can control when you use it, it would be a sin. If you want to relax on a Friday night, not a sin as long as it’s legal where you are at. Same goes for alcohol.

It is legal where I live, it didn’t hinder me in any way from going to work every day and living my life normally, an area it did hinder me in is my prayers.
Instead of going to God with my problems I went to marijuana instead.
1 Corinthians 10:23
23 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.
I feel as if this verse applies to my situation

People love to keep rehashing opinions on CAF, even if it has nothing to do with what you asked. Joshua. Again, if it is a problem for you in your relationship with God, then give it up.

I don’t know. But I personally hate that Garbage. Sorry I just had to get that off my chest.

Pretty sure he is talking about not using it at all, Dave. 😉
Pretty sure he was, too; I was just pointing out the options. That said, any way you look at it, it’s still illegal here in Alabama. I’m a law-abiding dude, so that takes care of that. Caffeine and chocolate. I just made brownies; wanna come over? No, not THAT kind of brownies 😃
