If the Church does not specifically say that congregants may receive Communion in a particular fashion, they should not do so. They should not improvise any kind of prayer postures or gestures that the Church has not mandated. In this case, I have seen couples do this at Communion and it is distracting to other congregants, confusing to the ministers of Communion, and can cause traffic jams in the Communion line. For all of these reasons, I can only recommend that you and anyone else doing this stop.
