You are right, it is best not to get into a discussion about this.

Sorry, but as a former Eucharistic minister, I’ve seen what happens when people receive Communion in the hand. No matter how clean your hands are, the tiniest Particle comes off on your hands.

True trivia tidbit: In the early Church, the faithful NEVER received directly in the hand. They used a cloth napkin called the Dominicanum. This was ONLY used for receiving Holy Communion. The priest/deacon would put the Host in the Dominicanum and then the communicant would carefully take It and then consume the Host.

It is not every time, but, it is also not all that uncommon for there to be a slip and the priest’s finger touches my tongue. For that reason, I would receive in the hand if I had thrush or any infection.

Which is why I said that’s the best case - but as I said, unless you’re severely compromised, you’re highly, highly unlikely to catch thrush that way. The reason it bounces from mom to baby in nursing mothers is because you don’t have natural flora and bacteria and acids on breast skin to control yeast growth. You do in your mouth, which is why you don’t walk around getting thrush infections all the time, or why kissing someone doesn’t cause you to get thrush from “exposure” to their mouth’s bacteria. Yeast is yeast, and on people, it’s the same species.

I’m also afraid that I’m going to forget what I’m doing when I go up.
Just place your right palm over your left palm. When the EMHC places the host in your palm, turn your right hand so as to slide the host into your left. Then pick the host up from the left hand and place in mouth.
Practice beforehand with vanilla wafers as needed.
That seems unnecessarily complicated.

I’ve only seen it done like this- person puts right hand under left, receives into left palm, then uses right hand to pick up the Host and transfer Him to the mouth.

Reverse this if left-handed, of course.

Just make sure you have washed your hands well and receive in your hands.

As to the debate about tongue or hands, remember that the Pope has allowed it. If the Pope is the person that Jesus has put into place to head the Church, then we should be obedient to His decision. Listen to the one He selected and don’t feel bad about receiving by the hand.

This can add extra fear to those with scrupulosity.

I doubt one is going to go from a dirty farm or construction job straight up the Communion line. As long as your hands are in a normal state, you are fine. We don’t have to do a special scrub before Mass (although by watching, some folks think that is what the Holy Water font is for!)

Oral thrush is usually healed within a few days using a pastille from the pharmacy
