I have spent most of my adult years as an Evangelical Anti-Catholic until this spring when I became a Catholic at the Easter vigil. (Long story).A "friend"told me since my husband had been divorced before we were married I should no longer recieve communion. He was raised Catholic, had been previously married to a protestant in a Protestant church. I know he cannot partake in communion unless he goes through the annullment process which isn’t a sure thing, but does this affect my recieving communion? Thanks for any help.

This should have been straightened out before you completed RCIA. Talk to your priest about it.

Look at it this way: If his previous marriage IS considered valid, then your current marriage is invalid. That’s why you should discuss this with the priest.

Dear teacup.

You should talk to a priest as soon as possible. He will be able to give you an answer and can also tell you how can correct your situation.

Sorry to hear about your situation. In one of our neighboring large parishes they have annulment information and take applications for annulment when people sign up for R.C.I.A. Praying that things will work out for you.

God bless,
Deacon Tony SFO

Thanks for your replies. I’m sort of stunned at the moment now knowing my marriage is “invalid”. My sponsor knew about my husbands previous marriage and I had talked to the priest about what would be needed for my husband to get an anullment but no one mentioned it affected my joining and first communion.( I apologize for whining). I wonder if my confirmation and First communion are also invalid. The RICA program wasn’t very helpful as I have dicovered by reading other peoples comments about their experiences in RICA. I have an appt to talk to another priest next week and see where this goes next. Thank you all for kind comments.

This is too complicated to discuss on an internet board. Please ask the priest about you First Communion and Confirmation.

Were you Baptized at the Easter Vigil?

A Person must be in a state of Grace to receive any benefit from any Sacraments.
