I sometimes submit stories to a literary magazine. The editor recently published an anti-Catholic story of his own in the magazine in which John Paul the Great is cast into hell after his funeral. The magazine is not anti-Catholic per se, but is it appropriate for me to continue submitting stories to this magazine?

There is no rule that says you can’t submit your stories to such a magazine. It’s really a matter of prudential judgment. Certainly a magazine with an editor who chooses to use the magazine as a forum for publishing his own story speculating that John Paul II is in hell does sound as though its editorial board has an anti-Catholic slant, at the very least. One way of testing to discern whether or not you want to continue submitting your material to this magazine would be to write to the editor and ask if the magazine would publish a story that shows JPII in heaven. If you receive an affirmative response, you might wish to create such a story for the magazine. If you receive a negative response, you’ll know that, on Catholic issues, the magazine’s editorial staff is interested only in publishing an anti-Catholic viewpoint and thus may not be a fitting venue for publishing your own stories.
