I converted to Catholic in Feb 09 and have learned so much about the Catholic Church that I feel led to teach RCIA. What are the requirements to volunteer to teach it?

I’m not sure there’s a simple answer to that question. Have you talked with your RCIA director?

There are many different roles within RCIA and someone who can’t fulfill one role might be able to fulfill another. Leading the dismissal of the catechumens and helping them break open the word is different from teaching a catechetical session and that’s different from Inquiry sessions. There may be other roles as well such as hospitality or working with sponsors.

I’d suggest talking with your RCIA director who will know what is needed in your parish and will also be familiar with any requirements from your diocese or parish.

Normally you would sponsor first, maybe with some minor teaching, and later teach. However it varies greatly by parish, with some having nobody for RCIA, while others have priests or deacans teaching. There are catechist certificates but if you have nobody now asking someone to attend class for 1-4 years then teach after that does not work well. So in summary it depends on the parish as much as it depends on you.

i am looking into it myself…

i suggest talking to the local director of spiritual education. or your parish people. and asking what they could use. they may need someone to sponsor a few of the students 9many have no one they know to sponsor them) to attend RCIA or other events… to read the lessons at RCIA…
to figure out how the @#$%^& VCR works… lol (sorry, our RCIA had a VCR machine that was… uh… temperamental)

you could work WITH the RCIA while preparing to teach it later.

Thank you all for your advice! I will talk to our director at our parish!

God bless!
