Can I Use Mass Prayers In My Private Prayer or Group Prayers?

As a former Protestant, I am still very much used to spontaneous prayers.

Those spontaneous prayers may also include snippets of Bible verses.

For example, when praying for guidance, I might start praying and say,

“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness therof. The world and they that dwell therein.” That’s from Psalm 24.

Then I might go on to say, “Lord, I know everything is under your control, etc.”

The Bible verse might suddenly enter my mind and so I pray it.

So my question is, if let’s say I had some ladies over my house for a get-together and I led the prayer at some point, would it be wrong to use any part of the prayers offered at mass, during our prayer:

For example:
the Santus
the Kyrie

So let’s say I am praying for a wayward child of one of the ladies and while praying, the Kyrie comes to mind. Would it be okay to pray that?

I know I can use some prayers like the Hail Mary, Saint Michael the Archangel etc.

So I guess my question is how much flexibility do I have, or are some prayers off limits, less they seem like a mass?
 
I don’t see a problem. I use the words of saints (Augustine, moslty), Scripture (the Gospels, mostly), and the Mass in spontaneous prayer myself. I was raised Southern Baptist, by the way, though at this point I prefer scripted prayers, especially those of meditative nature (like the Hail Mary in the Rosary and the Jesus Prayer - which I repeat in an almost-Rosary-like fashion when doing voluntary penance). I also tend to add the St. Michael prayer after Mass, and the Litany of Humility as my post-Communion or Spiritual Communion prayer.

For example, if I have sinned and am sorry for my sins, I will pray the Agnus Dei. I find myself especially during Lent and Advent singing the Kyrie (via a simplified form of Mozart’s Requiem Mass) to myself.

I also sometimes mix the Minor Doxology (Glory Be) with the Gloria of the Mass. It starts out as the Minor Doxology and is transformed into the Gloria and sometimes vice versa.

I do, admittedly, mix the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds if I do not have a prayer book on hand when I am praying the Rosary - or I just skip the Creed altogether and replace it with something else.

One of my favorite passages of Scripture to reflect upon is John 1:1-5. These verses have always had an impact on me. In some way, I think that these five verses are the summary of the entirety of Sacred Scripture.

So, short answer, I would say certainly!
 
I’d say anything but the consecration. Also, ensure that it doesn’t appear that you’re simulating a Mass.
 
Hi,

I have sometimes used the prefaces as prayers and meditating on them. I do use most of the Mass for lectio divina. The words of consecration, I usually mediate on them, or think of them while looking at the crucifix. It’s one thing to say the words of consecration, its’ another thing to mediatate upon them.

So if I did anything like what you described in a group prayer setting, no one would be horrified?
 
If you say a spontaneous Sanctus, don’t be suprised if people kneel afterward out of habit. 😃

You may want to serve white wine at that get together so that there is no misunderstanding. 😉
