Can I use this at my parish's Novus Ordo Mass?

then while waiting for the new translation, buy the inexpensive paper covered, pocket size St. Joseph missal (about $5), annual for Sundays of the year, makes no sense to invest now in a permanent missal until the revisions are available. The Word Among Us, one of my favorite devotionals, now has the daily Mass readings included, a great feature.
 
I second puzzleannie’s comment, specifically the part about wasting money on a missal in the current/old translation.

scapularkid8, Magnificat also has the common prayers in Latin in every issue. As for art, I don’t think anyone who’s subscribed to Magnificat for very long would say it doesn’t feature great works of art prominently each month. That said, I do identify with your want for a single, bound, useful missal. And I’m planning to buy one when the new translation comes out (or perhaps a year after so I don’t get the error-prone first edition of whatever missal I choose to invest in). In the mean time, Magnificat is a great resource.

You can also look for the St. Joseph’s Missal. There are several versions. There is the Sunday Missal (in hardcover and zipper editions) and two volumes of Daily Missals (in hardcover and zipper editions). The zipper version is small, and is a favorite of many for it’s size. It can easily be slipped into a pocket. Search for missals here:

Now, that said, this is a very bad time to buy a missal, because the Vatican is about to release a completely new English translation of the Mass, probably sometime in 2008. You might want to wait to purchase one until next year.

Yeh whenever that will be!. 2008 will come and you will still not be able to see it until 2010. They have been talking about a new mass for years. Just bring back the TLM and be done with it. Sorry Eucharistic ministers. You will have to be seated. I doubt the new proposed mass will be much different than what is their now, except added latin in some parts and longer responses. But the overall effect will not be the same as TLM. And I’m sure you will still have Eucharistic minsters running up to the altar:extrahappy: to aid the priest with the distribution of the Eucharist. Bypassing the guitar players on the way. :coffeeread:

I own this missal and use it every week I go to a NO Mass at my local parish. I attend the TLM once a month. I bring it with me for several reasons, even though the Mass parts have been changed in the NO:
  1. The prayers at the front of the missal are simply beautiful. They help me focus my attention on the holy sacrifice that is about to take place. I use the prayers before Mass begins, before communion, and after communion.
  2. I read parts of the Mass, especially beginning with the offeratory, to myself while the gifts are being prepared. Again, it helps me to focus.
  3. I often read the Roman Canon to myself during the preparation of the gifts, since our priests tend to use the speedy “Eucharistic Prayer Number Two”, which is over in about 3 minutes.
I think you’ll like the missal, especially if you are exploring the more traditional side of Catholicism. It has commentary on all the pages of the ordinary of the Mass which tells you why everything is being done, and the proper of the saints is a wealth of information on the church. It’s well worth the investment.

Is this referring to the original Missal I mentioned?
 
Yes, I was referring to the original missal you asked about, the 1962 Missal. It also has a very goog introduction which discusses the theology behind Holy Mass.
