I have a sick child at home so I am skipping Sunday mass this week. My husband took my other child and mom to church. He said I should go tomorrow. But I have decided to stay home and watch the mass online. Plus I have been having a headache for the past two days. I said some prayers to make up for not attending mass. Somehow I feel guilty for skipping mass because I always go.

Most places have been dispensed of their obligation for months now and there’s no sin in not attending, although it’s encouraged within safety guidelines.

Caring for sick family is a sufficient reason to miss mass, in most cases. I would say you have absolutely no reason to worry about this case. I hope both you and your child feel better soon.

If you cannot go to Sunday Mass for a valid reason such as caring for a sick person, being sick yourself, or even providing basics for yourself or family, then the obligation to attend is lifted.

And you do not have to do anything else at all, so anything you might do is laudatory, but not necessary. It is nice to think of attending a weekday Mass or watching Mass on TV, but it is not at all required.

There is a very high probability that you have no obligation to go to Mass at the moment. In a great many places the bishops have dispensed the obligation. If that applies where you live you have no obligation to fulfil. Your parish or diocese can inform you of local circumstances.

If we were in normal times and the Mass obligation had not been dispensed there are perfectly valid reasons for not going to Mass. You have two of them. One is if you are ill. Another is if you are caring from someone who is ill.

As Glennon_P says, ‘Be at peace’.

It is not an obligation when there is a serious reason. Our priest recommended that when not attending in person, to participate at home, following all the postures, and saying all the responses.
