Can I wear earplugs during the homily?

My priest constantly preaches about books and articles that he’s read, or movies he’s seen. Occasionally, he makes statements that contradict Catholic teaching. These homilies are confusing and upsetting. I’m nervous about bringing the matter to the Bishop, because A) I don’t think he’ll do much about it, and B) I’m scared that my priest will find out that I was the one who complained.

Can I wear earplugs to spare myself this poor teaching? I’m worried about the effect that it might have on my faith over time.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

Dear friend,

Wearing ear plugs during a homily is insulting and disrespectful to the priest and the Liturgy, not to mention bad example for other parishioners. I suggest that you attend Mass at another parish.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
