Can I work on January 1st?

Dear Apologists!

I’m a student and I work part time at a fast food chain. They said it was compulsory to sign up to work on either Christmas or New Year. I was under the impression that January 1st is not a religious holiday so I signed up to work that day. I just read that it is a holy day of obligation. Should I change my shift to december 31st?
