Can Laymen and Eucharistic ministers open and close the Tabernacle at Mass?

During Mass, can Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and laymen open and close the tabernacle to retrieve and store Holy Communion? I have seen this at Mass and when I was little, the Priest was the only one who was allowed to open and close the Tabernacle.

Not just priests can open the tabernacle. Deacons are ordinary members of Communion and are expressly permitted. Laymen such as Acolytes who are normally the first among the extraordinary ministers of the eucharist and are also expressly permitted to open the tabernacle.
