A few months ago I would have said maybe, but not for me. However, this week my boyfriend moved to another country. We had known it was coming for ages - since before we started dating, even. He was supposed to go last year, and I knew we wouldn’t have made it because the relationship was too young. I asked him to stay, and he did. This year there was no way around it, and he moved.
I feel completely at peace with the idea of being in a long distance relationship with him. He doesn’t have cell phone reception or reliable internet access in his small rural town, so we set up rules for how long he can go without contacting me before I’ll begin to worry. We had the opportunity to discuss our concerns about being in a long distance relationship before he left, and we were able to reassure each other that those issues have been resolved. We can each trust the other to be faithful, honest, and trustworthy.
The hardest thing for me is the little details that I’m missing in his life, and he’s missing in mine. I used to text him on my way home from work every evening to tell him how my day went, and again when I got home to tell him I was home safely. I wonder whether he’s eating right, and whether his back is bothering him, and what computer games he plays before he falls asleep at night. We were separated for a month before, and when I saw him again there were all these tiny differences that made me sad because I hadn’t seen them as they were happening. It even bothered me that he had changed the curtains at his place and bought a new gaming console, and I hadn’t known about it and felt left out of the loop. The tiniest details of life were the ones that I missed.
It’s only been four days since we’ve been separated. Now that I know what it feels like, I’m certain that I can do it. It won’t be fun, it won’t be easy, but we are strong enough to make it through. Good luck, whatever you decide with yours.
