I know it is not right for a man to wear a hat inside a church, but is it allowed for him to take it off and hold it in his hand until mass is over if there is no other place to keep it?

You don’t really think that there is a rule against taking a hat into a church, do you?

Kudos to you for wearing a hat! I wear hats to church and am the ONLY one, unless it’s Easter – and then my own only company is women.

(Unless you mean a baseball cap…)

I know a church that had these clips at the back of the pews and when I asked what they were for, it was to hold men’s hats. Kind of like a clothes pin. 👍

that ranks right up there with chewing gum during Mass…just set yr cap/\hat down on the pew and grab it carry it out and put it on yr head after yr outside

The parishes I grew up in all had these, and I remember asking my father (who didn’t wear a hat even back then) what they were for. I’m sure they’re still around in older churches.

Actually, a man should never wear a hat indoors, not just in church.

I think there’s a special spot in the hereafter for the person who started the current baseball-cap-everywhere craze.

I’ve been to churches that have special hooks on the back of the each row of pews for hanging hats.

Trying to remember Miss Manner’s advice. IIRC, a gentleman can wear his hat into a church or other building, but takes it off once he is inside. There are exceptions - stores, I think, covered stadiums, that sort of thing.

And, of course, men who are not gentlemen wear their baseball caps at all times.

My parish USED to have these…but when the main part of the church was redone in 1992…they were removed. I remember that was where my grandpa may have clipped his hat to.

Are we talking a nice church hat or a baseball hat? If its a baseball hat, unless you walked/rode a bus/rode the subway or came by bike…leave it in the car.

Most of the older Catholic Churches had them. Many were removed to put holders for Mass Song books. God Bless, Memaw

I believe the rule is any place that’s similar to a street the hat can be worn (stores and stadiums like you said, as well as hotel lobbies, and train stations).

I’d very much like to see hats make a come back!

I liked it when men used to tip their hat when they walked past a lady. Women’s Lib did away with that and many other gentlemanly things. God Bless, Memaw

I often wear hockey caps during the summer, but most of the time I wear them to church (weekday mass not Sundaymass) I do place it in my hand upon entering the church and leave it beside me on the bench until the mass is over and I leave the sanctuary.
Once Im out of the church my cap is back on:)

Maybe at some point I should buy and try a classical hat?🙂
mhm…

God Bless

Perhaps the OP is referring to the Corinthians(?) based tradition of women COVERING their hair on church while men UNCOVERED?
I have wondered myself why, when women stopped regularly covering after Vatican 2, men didn’t start keeping their hats on. Sometimes it’s very cold in some churches, and as a woman, I take advantage of the hair covering tradition and keep my winter hat on. But then I feel for my poor bald hubby!

Not everyone drives to church.

And if a man is wearing a baseball cap because it’s raining, snowing, or cold, there’s nothing wrong in wearing until he’s inside the church.

I know there’s a special place for Cub fans who’ve had to endure so many losing seasons. 🙂

My husband is guilty of this. I loathe it. Drives me nuts. Bald men are especially prone to this. Who do they think they are kidding? You were bald when I met you dude! It didn’t stop me from marrying you!
🤷

Oh man…he just read this over my shoulder and said “maybe it will grow back?”

Not if it doesn’t get fresh air and sunlight…don’t think so… 😛
