Can men dress immodestly?

Mass and school are all right. But I don’t wear that to the bar or to a restaurant. It’s just too much

There are plenty of reasons to wear a blazer. Dances, nice dinners, weddings, church events, etc… The khaki pant/blue blazer is a nice look. Although usually best for high school and college, in my opinion. By the time you’re an adult a nice suit may be more appropriate for such occasions.

Depends on age and style, etablissement and city. Going out in a blazer in frankfurt where we lived before in your late 20s was perfectly fine. And, even if not usual it has sometimes the benefit of being noticed as serious or distant in a way.

Modesty is not just about attempting to tempt others to lust over you. Modesty is also about attempting to tempt people to envy you or to cultivate pride (rather than mere self-respect) in yourself concerning your own appearance. Women in our culture are particularly pressured and encouraged to base their self-esteem on their capacity to do this, but men are increasingly being seen (and being encouraged to see themselves) as having social popularity based on their standing as objects of lust.

Men who dress in tight clothing meant to highlight themselves as objects of lust for others are dressing immodestly just as surely as women who do the same thing. Having said that, lust is aroused in most women in a different way. I would say the men most likely to exhibit immodest clothing choices, therefore, are the men trying to arouse lust in other men.

Men trying to get women to lust after them don’t usually choose to present themselves in visual terms. That doesn’t let them off the hook for self-examination when it comes to trying to incite lust or envy in others. As with women, this is a distraction one ought to particularly avoid when one will be at Mass.

The inappropriateness of coming to Mass dressed in a slovenly manner or as if one were shoe-horning Mass in on the way to some other activity that was rated as more important to “dress for” than Sunday Mass in observance of the Lord’s Day is another topic altogether.

The it-will-barely-button fit seems to be the style now. Why is that? These men look as if they’re trying to keep getting by with the blazer their mom bought them for Confirmation instead of admitting that they have filled out since high school. Yet I see guys who are obviously buying tailored suits and sparing no expense who select that cut.
(I mean sports figures giving interviews after dressing in their street clothes; guys who also compete with teammates on their sense of style.)

At my school the guys generally dress nice, and don’t show anything. The girls? That’s a whole other story. In fact, there’s a couple of outfits I asked my guy friends about that I thought were kinda too showy- one was a dress with a slightly deep neckline and another was a dress that was a little short. I got halfway though my question before they said I practically look like a nun in the way I dress (jeans and boots, dress referred to above, most of my clothes) because I’m petite so I don’t have anything to show really, and while I think the clothes might be slightly eh my guy friends unfortunately are used to seeing a whole lot more. And everyoke I know says skinny leg jeans on a guy are awful. You could say modestly is based on culture. In some native Americans tribes women went around bare chested and no one cared because it was normal.

It’s true that they draw more attention, because they’re so uncommon. However, they reveal less than pants.
Except on a windy day. Or while on a rollar coaster.

Verily, I speak from observation.

For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

(With apologies to St. Luke.)

Sure, if a man wore a crushed velvet tailcoat and top hat to a corporate board meeting, that would be immodest.

Modesty is far more than making sure no one is looking at your “naughty bits”

Ah, we have an old schooler amongst us. The Victorians and Edwardians did likely know what they were doing. 😉
You refer to the well-known trope of placing curtains onto piano and table legs lest they scandalize the male gaze?

I get that men are visual and women are attractive, but calm down. Men have legs too.
Arguably three of them, considering the recent trend of men wearing skinny jeans.

Some things cannot be unimagined.

Yes, among homosexual men and maybe among extreme metrosexuals.

Dressing immodest isn’t a macho thing to do and is considered feminine among many men, esp conservative men.

But I do see a tendency among metrosexual guys to dress a bit immodest in the summertime. Especially with tank tops. I never felt comfortable with a tank top, even when playing basketball. I always preferred to wear a t-shirt underneath.

Honestly, I think a lot of what your write here is actually true.

The blazer not fitting style has developed because a lot of guys in college have just one blazer that they bought years ago. The ones who work out think it’s cool that their muscles are making it tight.

The college football players who do that go onto play in the NFL and keep getting suits like that. Now you have a number of ex NFL guys on ESPN doing that. So the tailors have taken notice.

Many stores, like Banana Republic, JCrew, etc do not sell blazers in regular or long sizes. They only sell Short / Sport cuts. That’s were a lot of these guys you see wearing those suits are buying their blazers. They are not buying Ralph Lauren suites in Regular cut from Macy’s.

But you don’t really see that in baseball, where most guys didn’t go to college.
