I was under the impression that the dietary laws were near identical to Judaism. Coming from my brother who can’t eat at his mothers house now that he has declared it unclean. But then my cousin, who converted but not to the Nation of Islam asked were I had heard that and it was only a Nation of Islam thing.

I asked my Sunni Muslim friend this question once, and she clarified that pork and alcohol were the only restrictions, so I guess it’s a Nation of Islam thing? My course on food and religion in university also specified that pork and alcohol were the only prohibited foods, nothing else (except dog, perhaps, as many Muslims think they’re unclean).

From everything I have ever heard or read, The Nation of Islam has only the dietary restrictions as other Moslems. It just sounds like your brother is being foolisn and trying to break someones b***s. I would pay no attention to him. I am sorry for your mother though.

I wouldn’t say halal was nearly identical to kashrut, but they share many basic principles: no consumption of animal blood, ritual slaughter, fit animals must chew the cud and shouldn’t be predatory. But there are many things permissible under halal, that are not under kashrut, allowing Muslims more options to what and where they can eat: dairy and meat products can be eaten together, utensils may come in contact with forbidden foods and mixtures (e.g., a plate that had bacon grease on it, although it should obviously be clean before a Muslim’s use, and many of my Muslim friends separate their utensils, to avoid this contact with non-Muslims’ dishes), and in some communities, shellfish is allowed (not the case for Shiites, I’ve heard).

I have never met a Muslim who objected to eating in a non-Muslim home or a non-halal restaurant, so I’m a little surprised to hear this.

The Nation of Islam are viewed as heretics by “real” Muslims…
…I found this out in Desert Storm where even in the middle east where communication isn’t what it is here.
…Know about the sect and condemn it as an African American invention & blasphemy of Islam.
