I have a wonderful mom. Love her very much. She has been a seeker of God most of her life. This has meant moving from one religion to another, to meditation, to new age, and so on. Unfortunately, back in the early 80s an Indian “guru” got ahold of her. My mom traveled to India twice, and moved about the country to be with this person. I watched thousands of people give away their money and their lives to this person. My life was unfortunately affected by this affiliation growing up as well. My mom has since retired and lives by me. She was at my baptism as a Catholic and she was moved by it. She see’s Jesus as a “great being”, but also includes this guru and other spiritual leaders in the same category.

I worry for her. This “guru” is black magic and BAD. I don’t want my mom focusing on this person. It’s hard to be in my mom’s house because there’s pictures of this “guru” everywhere! My mom remains influenced by other things such as astrology and gets cards read. Even though she knows my stance on these things, she’s quite persistent in tring to get me to the card reader and talks about the planets like it’s their fault when the day goes badly.

Talking to her will do nothing. I have (carefully) pointed out the shady sides of her “perfected” teacher, but she just sees this as a test to her own faith.

I pray for my mom and try to stay hopeful that one day she will move past this person. I’ve shared with her the blessings of the Rosary and talked to her about the many and wonderful breakthroughs I’ve had within my own new-found religion. What more can I do? She has shown interest in going to Mass… more as an excuse to hang out with me, but regardless of how she gets there it could help, right?

You’re faith can absolutely help your Mom. Even if she isn’t open to giving all of that, …stuff, up, you can be a good example to her and pray for her. Believe me, praying for the conversion of others works - maybe not instantly, but it does definitely work. Just keep on doing what you are doing and storm Heaven for her. I’ll gladly join you in prayer.

Oh yes! Thank you. More prayer. I will always do that for her.

I think I will make a point of inviting her to Mass this weekend. I’ve been hesitant to bring it up because I don’t want to appear “pushy”, but like I said before, I think I can use the simple fact she wants to hang out with me more as a way to get her there.

But like I said before, I think I can use the simple fact she wants to hang out with me more as a way to get her there.

Andi… perhaps, your mother would accompany you to Eucharistic Adoration? Placing her in the Presence of Our Lord would be very beneficial for her. Do you think she’d be open to this?

I’ve been taking my mother to twice weekly Adoration for some time, now… (my mother suffers from Alzheimer’s) and while I am NOT suggesting that she is being cured of her disease (although, even that would be possible for Our Lord)… I have noticed in her a definite, overall serenity… that was not there before.

God bless you both. You’re in my prayers, too.:byzsoc:

I could certainly ask her to go to Eucharistic Adoration with me. I know she’ll go to Mass, so I’ll start there. But that is a wonderful idea, and I think she would be open to it.

Lots of great advice on this thread 🙂

I’d add praying the Rosary and the chaplet of Divine Mercy for her, offering your sufferings as redemption for her, and prayer, prayer, prayer. 👍 Here are a few I like:

The St. Michael Prayer
St. Michael the Archangel
Defend us in battle
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil
May God rebuke him we humbly pray
And do thou O Prince of the Heavenly Host
By the power of God
Cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Prayer to your guardian angel
Angel of God, who are my guardian
To whom Merciful God entrusted me
Enlighten and keep me this day
Guard and lead me, Amen.

You can substitute “me” and “my” for “her” or use her name. 😉 👍

Hello and welcom to the forum.

I have a question.

Is the name of the guru that your mother follows, Osho?

As far as your question goes, you can influence your mother, by your own faith, but you can not give her faith, only God can do that.

You can and should pray for her to receive faith. I prayed to the Blessed Mother, for my daughter’s future husband, years ago, and he ended up coming into the Church, before they got married.

So, prayer works!

God Bless
Jim
