Can my son join the Church without going through RCIA?

My son is 18 and views himself as Catholic because we, his parents, are. He was baptized in the Episcopal church, which we eventually left because of their numerous problems, mainly not being the one, true Church.

Now my son wants to be confirmed. Does he have to take RCIA classes or can he just be confirmed Catholic?
 
RCIA is mainly for the instruction and sacramental initiation of the unbaptized, but many parishes lump in non-Catholic Christians and adult Catholics seeking confirmation for practical reasons.

Your son may ask your pastor to evaluate his readiness for reception into the Church. If he is ready, he may be received and make his first Reconciliation and first Communion at any time. As for confirmation, that too can happen at any time, but the pastor may prefer that your son go through the RCIA program. Unless there is serious reason why he should be confirmed right away (e.g., entering the military, engaged to marry) it would be wise to encourage your son to respect the pastor’s judgment.
