My brother is being “married” outside of the Catholic Church. I am not going to the wedding, but he and his fiancee have asked that my two-year-old be the ring bearer. They thought he and my non-Catholic husband would go to the wedding. Is my son able to go since he doesn’t understand what’s going on?

If you are not attending your own brother’s wedding as a matter of principle, then neither should your husband or your son, no matter your husband’s religion or your son’s age. Your husband should decline to attend out of moral support for you since this is your (not his) brother’s wedding. Your son should not be attending anything you are boycotting out of moral principle. In fact, I’d go so far as to say your brother and his fiancee, knowing how you feel about their marriage, were out of line to presume to ask that your son be a ring bearer. Since your brother and his fiancee are not only marrying invalidly but are apparently attempting to stir up trouble in your marriage and family, I can only recommend that you and your husband (and son) have nothing to do with this wedding.
