The burning of sage and cedar and things, sometimes it is called smudging. Smudging is what Christians do on Ash Wednesday. Burning of herbs is called inscensing. Whether is is compounded in pine sap and broken into tiny pieces like pebbles, or leaves rolled and burned, it is the same thing, different histories.
