Can Non-Catholics be canonized as saints?

I recently read about a Catholic African who was martyred for refusing to renounce his faith in the mid-1800’s who later became a saint. The story alluded to several Anglicans who were martyred at the same time for the same reason, in this case refusing to renounce their Anglican faith. Would the fact that someone is not a Catholic exclude them from consideration for sainthood?
