I don’t believe either the Lutheran nor the Episcopal churches reject the ability of the Catholic Church to teach, preach or sanctify. If a non-Catholic Christian attempts to receive communion in a Catholic Church because he believes in the Real Presence, what is the basis of his belief? If he rejects the authority of the Catholic Church to teach, preach and sanctify, he also rejects its authority to ordain bishops, who ordain priests, to confect the Eucharist. If he rejects the authority by which the priest receives the power to confect the Eucharist, by definition he rejects the notion that anything sacramental occurs in those words and actions. Therefore, he can say that he believes Christ is present in the Eucharist, because he has rejected the mechanism by which that sacramental presence is made possible.
