I have a good friend at my parish who is an apologist. He has been perhaps the most help I have had in my spiritual journey, besides God himself, and I trust him when it comes to matters of doctrine and the Church. However, he has made some statements that give me some pause.
He claims that people who have never known the bible will most likely get into heaven. While I can see how that might be acceptable if God is merciful to those who at least seek out Truth, I am not sure I can believe this.
He also claims that Christians who KNOW the bible and still are in error of the truth, in apostasy, will go to heaven. If this is true, then what is the point of having “One True Church”, as the Catholic Church is? I cannot accept this either, and am having trouble with it.
Can you tell me what the Church teaches about eligibility for Heaven? I am sure this will clear it up for me, even if it is hard to accept, but I have to hear (read) it from another source other than my friend this time…
