Can non-Christians who reject the Word go to Heaven?

I am in RCIA and have been in discussions with Catholic friends about various subjects. One that I don’t quite understand is the Church’s position on non-Christians. I understand that if a non-Christian never hears the Word, they may still go to heaven if they live a just and holy life. However, what happens once a non-Christian hears the story of Christ, but rejects him as their savior? Certainly many Jews, Muslims, agnostics, atheists hear the Word, but don’t choose to accept Jesus as their savior. What will happen to them?
