Can one be excommunicated for a mortal sin committed before Catholic conversion?

Hello,

I have a friend who is currently in RCIA and is supposed to come into the church during Easter vigil. She is concerned that she will not be permitted to come into the church because she had an abortion when she was younger. She is also concerned that if she confesses this sin during her first confession, she will be excommunicated. Is this the case?
She is currently unbaptized.

Can. 11 Merely ecclesiastical laws bind those who have been baptized in the Catholic Church or received into it…

Ex communication is a “mere ecclesiastical law” and therefore only applies to those who are Catholic at the time of the action. Your friend was not a Catholic and thus the ex communication does not apply to her. The divine moral law against abortion, obviously, is still an issue but that will be taken care of through repentance and baptism.

Your friend will not need to confess the abortion because when she is baptized all her sins will be forgiven. Her first confession should only include sins she committed *after *baptism.
