If I don’t wear make up people start asking me if I am not feeling well or if I didn’t get sleep because I have dark shadows under my eyes and can look drawn out.
Same here. When I don’t wear make up to work people tell me I look like I’m dying. Gee, thanks.

I know that I look and feel better when I’ve applied some makeup (not a lot) as I am very pale skinned. I usually go without it when I do not have to work that day. Perhaps Mother Angelica is right about being charitable in that way.

I do see myself as dressing modestly. However, the “free from ostentation part”, not so much.

And no, I don’t dress like a Jezebel. 😛
Sorry if I implied that, I didn’t mean to.

Well, ostentatious has a few meanings, so the one I intend is pretentious or vulgar display, something that could be scandalous (to the weak). Really it is difficult to say what it is because it depends upon what group you are seen in. Ostentatious such as wearing expensive items so others will know of your wealth and be envious of it can be a problem, or dressing down to show rebellion when respect would be appropriate. It seems normal for women to wear some jewelry and makeup, but most people wear less expensive jewelry and makeup. Since clothing is also aesthetically appealing, many enjoy creating and seeing it, and it also has a social function. For example, we see the majesty expressed in the beauty and symbolism in the vestments appropriate for the liturgy, and we use costumes and makup for plays, dancing, uniforms, etc. It is acceptable in the western lands for women to wear makeup and jewelry.

I have rosacea so if I don’t wear makeup my face is very red and looks like I have a fever and I get comments from people who feel they need to let me know my face is red and ask if I feel okay. Then I have to explain why.
Makeup just prevents all that and looks better.

Okay… I guess I can let you talk me in to offering my personal views… 🙂

I am a woman who works as a labourer/equipment operator. The vast majority of my wardrobe comprises of work clothes and jammies. When I go to Mass and I have (neat, clean) pants and a button-down shirt with comfortable shoes, I not only feel respectful but that I actually am dressed up. :o (Also, not being a proud owner of a fashion sense!)

So, my opinion on modesty is that its is subjective to the person. If I were to wear a dress or skirt and blouse, plus dress shoes (no matter how modest), because I’m unused that type of clothing, I would spend most of the Mass focused on what I was wearing instead of what’s actually important.

Anyway there’s my :twocents:

Hopefully, there’s other women who are able to relate. I also forgot to mention my inherent clumsiness. If I had a heel above 1/2", I would probably trip. 😛

There is already a thread on attire and there are many old threads on the same subject on TC Forum and othe forums. Please do not open parallel threads.

Thank You
