I was wondering, can one who is ordained as a priest become just an exorcist?

Let me rephrase that. Is there an order that specializes in exorcism or such? I know the Vatican has a chief exorcist.

I don’t mean to discourage a potential vocation, but why would you want to become an exorcist?

Exorcisms can only be performed with the permission of the local bishop. I don’t think there are free lance exorcists roaming the land.

My advice…discern whether you have a priestly vocation first. Worry about your area of specialization later.

I don’t want to become an exorcist. I was simply curious.

Every priest or deacon is an exorcist. It used to be a Minor Order (below that of Holy Orders), but that was changed by the Vatican and is included in Diaconal Ordination.

But ‘regular’ priests and deacons can only operate in that capacity with permission of their Bishop.

The permission is granted by default for Baptisms (every Baptism done according to the Baptismal Rite includes an exorcism)

But other exorcisms require the Bishop’s approval.

In addition, each Diocese has a priest designated to be the chief exorcist for the Diocese. It is generally his responsibility to perform any other exorcisms that the clergy might request.

Ah, I see.

Perhaps someone else has some more information.

The little bit I’ve read about actual exorcisms disturbs me greatly. No way I’d take that job. :nope:

🙂 See my post above. If you have every seen a baptism done in a Catholic Church, you have seen an exorcism. It’s part of the Baptismal Rite.

And being in formation to the diaconate myself, I did, in fact sign up for that job 😉

Well, yes. But the stories I’m referring to weren’t baptisms.

Good luck with that, Brendan. Better you than me. 👋

Yes…I was a Exorcist for Protestants and agnostics because the Church would turn these people away.Unfortuantly I have been told to no longer perform them Since I Joined the Church…which has been a very sad thing for me!Also I have 15 years expeirence and still have people call me for help due to my past reputation

I am not directing this toward Bombay, I use this post as a springboard.

I am sorry that some people are so scared of exorsism and exorcists. Some ignorant priests , and there are many of them, shy away from an exorcism because they fear the evil spirits will enter them. So much IGNORANCE abounds about exorcism.

Stop and think, wasn’t Jesus, himself, an exorcist along with the Apostles? That was a prime example of what a priest should do.

An exorcist is a priest who is chosen by the bishop. If the bishop does not chose a priest the responsibility fall on him.
