Can one die for another's sins?

I’m active in Catholic Detention Ministries. I received a question that I’m having trouble answering. If one dies for the sins of another, is there any atonement for that persons sins?

Hi,

No sinner can enter heaven unless he himself is repentant. No sinner can be repentant for another. (Besides, he has his own sins to deal with.) One can pray that another will become repentant. But no one can live another’s life.
